On September 24, 2008, the Government of Vietnam issued Decree 02/ND-CP concerning the establishment of a commune-level town in My Tu district and Chau Thanh district, Soc Trang province.

Decree 02/ND-CP provides for the establishment of commune-level towns under My Tu District and Chau Thanh District in Vietnam as follows:
- Establishing Chau Thanh commune-level town under My Tu District based on the adjustment of 603.80 hectares of natural land and 6,984 inhabitants from Thuan Hoa Commune; 165 hectares of natural land and 1,608 inhabitants from Ho Dac Kien Commune.
- Establishing Chau Thanh District under Soc Trang Province based on the adjustment of 23,632.43 hectares of natural land and 103,518 inhabitants from My Tu District (including the entire natural land and population of the following communes: Thuan Hoa, Ho Dac Kien, An Ninh, An Hiep, Phu Tan, Phu Tam, Thien My, and the commune-level town of Chau Thanh).
After adjusting administrative boundaries:
- Thuan Hoa Commune retains 1,844.85 hectares of natural land and 8,053 inhabitants.
- Ho Dac Kien Commune retains 4,756.30 hectares of natural land and 14,186 inhabitants.
- My Tu District retains 36,815.56 hectares of natural land and 111,647 inhabitants, including 09 directly subordinate administrative units, comprising the commune-level town of Huynh Huu Nghia and the communes of My Tu, My Huong, My Phuoc, My Thuan, Hung Phu, Long Hung, Phu My, and Thuan Hung.
