Under the Regulation on Master's Training attached to Circular 15/2014/TT-BGDDT, the entrance exam for master's programs in Vietnam includes 3 papers, determined by the head of the training institution. To be specific:

  1. The foreign language paper and the level of foreign language proficiency of the applicant for each training major or specialty (including the second foreign language for those applying for a foreign language major) are determined based on the requirements of the master's program and the foreign language proficiency requirements of the students before the thesis defense is regulated;
  2. Two other papers, including one core paper of the training major or specialty, are determined according to the requirements of the training major or specialty of the master's degree program. Each paper can test the knowledge of one paper or integrate testing the knowledge of several undergraduate subjects;
  3. For specific majors, specialties, or application-oriented master's programs, the training institution in Vietnam can replace the non-core paper specified in Point b of this Clause with other suitable competency assessment methods in line with the requirements of the training program, major or specialty. This substitution (if any) must be specifically regulated on testing requirements, and scoring scale, and applied uniformly to all candidates applying for the sector, or major.

Note: The entrance exam papers and methods of the candidate's competency assessment mentioned above must be specified in the proposal for opening training majors or specialties for master's degrees, and included in the detailed regulations of this Regulation by the training institution. Any changes to the entrance exam papers or methods of the candidate's competency assessment are decided by the head of the training institution based on the recommendation of the academic training council and must be reported to the Ministry of Education and Training before the announcement of admissions.

Details can be found in Circular 15/2014/TT-BGDDT effective from July 01, 2014.
