October 30, 2008, the Government of Vietnam issued Decree 04/ND-CP on the adjustment of administrative boundaries of Than Uyen district to establish Tan Uyen district, Lai Chau province.

Decree 04/ND-CP stipulates the establishment of Tan Uyen District, Lai Chau Province in Vietnam as follows:
- Adjusting the administrative boundaries of Than Uyen District to establish Tan Uyen District, Lai Chau Province as follows:
- Establish Tan Uyen District under Lai Chau Province based on the adjustment of 90,326.75 hectares of natural area and 42,221 inhabitants of Than Uyen District (including the entire natural area and population of the communes: Muong Khoa, Phuc Khoa, Nam So, Nam Can, Than Thuoc, Trung Dong, Ho Mit, Pac Ta, Ta Mit, and commune-level town Tan Uyen).
- After the adjustment of administrative boundaries:
- Than Uyen District retains 79,680.50 hectares of natural area and 53,338 inhabitants, with 12 administrative units directly under, including the communes: Pha Mu, Muong Mit, Phuc Than, Muong Than, Muong Cang, Hua Na, Ta Hua, Ta Gia, Ta Mung, Muong Kim, Khoen On, and commune-level town Than Uyen.
- Administrative boundaries of Than Uyen District: East borders Sa Pa District, Van Ban District, Lao Cai Province, and Mu Cang Chai District, Yen Bai Province; West borders Quynh Nhai District, Son La Province; South borders Mu Cang Chai District, Yen Bai Province, and Muong La District, Son La Province; North borders Tan Uyen District, Lai Chau Province.
