Current Types of Driver's Licenses

Circular 58/2015/TT-BGTVT issued on October 20, 2015, effective from January 01, 2016, stipulates detailed regulations on the training, examination, and issuance of road motor vehicle driver's licenses

Road motor vehicles (hereinafter referred to as motor vehicles) include cars; tractors; trailers or semi-trailers towed by cars, tractors; two-wheeled motorcycles; three-wheeled motorcycles; mopeds (including electric motorcycles) and similar types of vehicles. According to Circular 58/2015/TT-BGTVT, driver's licenses are classified into 06 categories: A, B, C, D, E, F.

Category A includes A1, A2, A3, A4.

- A1 is issued to drivers for operating two-wheeled motorcycles with a cylinder capacity from 50 cm3 to under 175 cm3 and for disabled persons operating three-wheeled motorcycles for the disabled.- A2 is issued to drivers for operating two-wheeled motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of 175 cm3 or more and types of vehicles specified for category A1 driver's license.- A3 is issued to drivers for operating three-wheeled motorcycles, types of vehicles specified for category A1 driver's license, and similar vehicles.- A4 is issued to drivers for operating small tractors with a load capacity of up to 1,000 kg.

Category B includes B1, B2.

- Automatic B1 is issued to non-professional drivers for operating automatic transmission cars carrying up to 9 seats, automatic transmission trucks, including special automatic transmission trucks with a design load of under 3,500 kg.- B1 is issued to non-professional drivers for operating cars carrying up to 9 seats, trucks, including special trucks with a design load of under 3,500 kg, tractors towing a trailer with a design load of under 3,500 kg.- B2 is issued to professional drivers for operating special trucks with a design load of under 3,500 kg, including types of vehicles specified for category B1 driver's license.

Category C is issued to drivers for operating trucks, including special trucks, special cars with a design load of 3,500 kg or more, tractors towing a trailer with a design load of 3,500 kg or more, and types of vehicles specified for category B1, B2 driver's license.

Category D is issued to drivers for operating cars carrying 10 to 30 seats, including the driver's seat, and types of vehicles specified for category B1, B2, and C driver's licenses.

Category E is issued to drivers for operating cars carrying more than 30 seats and types of vehicles specified for category B1, B2, C, and D driver's licenses.

Category F is issued to individuals who already have category B2, C, D, or E driver's licenses for operating corresponding types of cars towing trailers with a design load of over 750 kg, semi-trailers, or articulated buses.

Driver's licenses for operating sleeper buses, city passenger cars (used for passenger transport businesses by bus) are of category D and category E.

Validity period of driver's licenses:

- A1, A2, A3 driver's licenses are valid indefinitely.- B1 driver's license is valid until the female driver reaches 55 years old and the male driver reaches 60 years old.- A4, B2 driver's licenses are valid for 10 years from the date of issuance.- C, D, E, FB2, FC, FD, FE driver's licenses are valid for 5 years from the date of issuance.
