Conditions for Promotion of Military Rank for Active-Duty Officers

Promotion in military rank for officers is a decision to elevate an officer to a higher military rank. Rank promotion is periodically considered within a specific timeframe. To be promoted in rank, active-duty officers must meet the following requirements.

1. Meeting the Officer Standards:

- General Standards:- Possess strong political courage, absolute loyalty to the Fatherland and the people, to the Communist Party of Vietnam, and the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam; have a high revolutionary vigilance, ready to fight, sacrifice, and fulfill all assigned tasks well;- Have revolutionary moral qualities; diligence, integrity, impartiality; exemplary adherence to the Party's policies, and the state's laws; promote democracy, strictly maintain military discipline; respect and unite with the people and comrades; be trusted by the masses;- Have a sound level of political and military science qualifications and the ability to creatively apply Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh thought, Party's guidelines, viewpoints, policies of the Party and the State to the task of building comprehensive national defense and building the people's army; possess knowledge of culture, economy, society, law, and other fields; have practical operational abilities to meet the assigned task requirements; graduate from the training program as per the regulations governing each position;- Have clear personal history, age, and health suitable for the position and military rank the officer is assuming.- Specific standards for each officer position as prescribed by the competent authority.

2. Current military rank lower than the highest military rank specified for the position currently held

3. Meeting the prescribed timeline for military rank promotion as follows:

- Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant: 2 years;- First Lieutenant to Senior Lieutenant: 3 years;- Senior Lieutenant to Captain: 3 years;- Captain to Major: 4 years;- Major to Lieutenant Colonel: 4 years;- Lieutenant Colonel to Senior Lieutenant Colonel: 4 years;- Senior Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel: 4 years;- Colonel to Major General, Rear Admiral Navy: minimum 4 years;- Major General, Rear Admiral Navy to Lieutenant General, Vice Admiral Navy: minimum 4 years;- Lieutenant General, Vice Admiral Navy to Colonel General, Admiral Navy: minimum 4 years;- Colonel General, Admiral Navy to General: minimum 4 years;

The time officers spend studying at military schools counts towards the timeline for military rank promotion.

The age for active-duty officers considered for promotion from the rank of Colonel to Major General, Rear Admiral Navy, does not exceed 57, and exceptions can be made based on the President's decision.

Active-duty officers who achieve especially outstanding achievements may be considered for extraordinary promotion, but not beyond the highest rank specified for the officer's current position.
