World Cup 2018 has officially commenced and will last for 1 month until July 15, 2018. This is a period of enjoyment for football fans but also an opportunity for certain individuals to engage in gambling, theft, and other activities in Vietnam.
Below is the text where Lawnet will address common crimes to watch out for during the World Cup 2018 season:
1. Gambling offense in Vietnam (Article 321 of the Criminal Code 2015)
It is not only the act of gambling that can constitute a gambling offense. According to the provisions of the law, gambling activities can include: To tom, xoc dia, playing cards, lottery, football betting, horse racing betting, and other activities with the purpose of winning or losing money or valuables without permission or not complying with the issued license regulations.
Thus, betting on football with a value of 5 million VND or more per match will be considered gambling, with the highest penalty for this act being 7 years in prison and a fine of up to 50 million VND.
2. Theft of property in Vietnam (Article 173 of the Criminal Code 2015)
In order to have money for betting, many individuals find ways to take advantage of others' negligence to seize property. The act of stealing property valued at 2 million VND or more becomes a theft crime. The maximum penalty for theft of property is 20 years in prison and a fine of up to 50 million VND.
3. Robbery in Vietnam (Article 171 of the Criminal Code 2015)
Similar to theft, robbery is one of the common crimes during the World Cup season. However, unlike theft, robbery is a more dangerous act because it has a high potential to affect the health and life of the victim.
Anyone who robs the property of others can be sentenced to life in prison and fined up to 100 million VND.
4. Robbery in Vietnam (Article 168 of the Criminal Code 2015)
In addition to theft and robbery, burglary is also a common crime that needs to be watched out for at this time. Among the crimes that infringe on property rights, robbery is considered the most dangerous act.
The highest penalty for robbery is life imprisonment and a fine of up to 100 million VND.
5. Usury in civil transactions in Vietnam (Article 201 of the Criminal Code 2015)
At this time, the demand for borrowing money for football-related entertainment activities will increase, so many people intend to lend at high interest rates.
However, lenders should be aware that lending at an interest rate five times or more than the highest interest rate specified in Article 468 of the Civil Code 2015 (20% per year), with illicit profits from 30 million VND or more, becomes a usury crime.
