Circular 15: Temporary leave of absence during master's program in Vietnam

On May 15, 2014, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam issued Circular 15/2014/TT-BGDDT on the Regulation of Master’s Training.

Circular 15: Temporary leave of absence during master's program in Vietnam (Illustration)

The Master’sTraining Regulations issued together with Circular 15/2014/TT-BGDDT provide for temporary leave of absence during the master's program in Vietnam as follows:

- Learners may apply for temporary leave of absence and retention of the results in the following cases: being drafted into the armed forces or performing international duties; suffering from illness, accidents requiring long-term treatment, or taking maternity leave according to regulations with certification from a competent medical authority. For other cases, the training institution only permits temporary leave of absence to learners who have completed at least one semester at the institution, have a GPA of 5.5 or higher on a 10-point scale or equivalent, and are not under disciplinary action.

- The period of temporary leave of absence for those drafted into the armed forces or performing international duties is the duration stated in the decision of the competent authority and is not counted towards the total time of study, which must not exceed 2 years.

- The period of temporary leave of absence for other cases is the necessary time according to the learner's needs and aspirations but the maximum duration for completing the training program must comply and not exceed 2 years.

- The head of the training institution shall stipulate the specific procedures for temporary leave of absence, approval authority, and the procedures for reintegrating learners into the study program after the leave period.
