6 Requirements for compiling higher education textbook in Vietnam

Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training promulgated Circular 04/2011/TT-BGDDT on Regulations for drafting, selecting, appraising, approving, and using higher education textbooks in Vietnam.

6 Requirements for compiling higher education textbook in Vietnam​ (Illustrative photo)

According to Circular 04/2011/TT-BGDDT, when compiling higher education textbook in Vietnam, the following 6 requirements must be ensured:

  1. The textbook must concretize the requirements regarding the content of knowledge, skills, and attitudes stipulated in the training program for each subject, field of study, and training level, meeting the demands of innovative teaching methods in higher education and the assessment of training quality.

  2. The content of the textbook must align with the objectives and training programs, ensure the standards of knowledge, skills, and stipulated outcomes.

  3. Knowledge in the textbook must be presented scientifically and logically, ensuring a balance between theory and practice, suitable for practical situations, and updated with the latest knowledge in science and technology.

  4. Contents cited from reference materials to compile the textbook must have clear origins and annotations, fully meeting the requirements of copyright under current regulations.

  5. At the end of each chapter of the textbook, there must be a list of reference materials, review questions, discussion orientation, and practical exercises.

  6. The form and structure of the textbook must ensure uniformity and comply with specific regulations of the higher education institution.

Simultaneously, the language used to compile the textbook must ensure:

- The language used to compile the textbook is Vietnamese.

- Textbooks for certain subjects at higher education institutions implementing advanced programs, foreign language and cultural training programs, joint training programs with foreign countries, and some other training programs taught in foreign languages are compiled in foreign languages.

More details can be found in Circular 04/2011/TT-BGDDT, which comes into effect in Vietnam from March 15, 2011.
