05 Requirements for Designing Garbage Rooms and Garbage Chutes to Prevent Fire Spread

Circular 01/2020/TT-BXD stipulates that when designing buildings to prevent fire spread, garbage rooms, garbage chutes, and garbage collection doors must be designed and installed in accordance with standards and technical requirements specific to these components, with the following specific requirements:

- Garbage chutes and garbage rooms must be isolated from other parts of the building by fire-resistant components; garbage collection doors on each floor must have automatically closing fire-resistant doors.

- Garbage chutes must be made of non-combustible materials.

- Garbage chutes and garbage rooms must not be located inside stairwells, lobbies, or fire-protected vestibules used for evacuation.

- Rooms containing garbage chutes or garbage rooms must have direct access through an open space outside the building or through a regularly ventilated fire-resistant vestibule.

- Entrance doors to garbage rooms must not be located adjacent to evacuation exits, exterior doors of the building, or near residential windows.

The selection of the size of buildings and fire compartments, as well as the distance between buildings, must be based on fire resistance levels, structural fire hazard levels, functional fire hazard groups, and fire load values, taking into account the effectiveness of used fire protection measures, the presence, location, and equipment level of fire units, as well as the possible economic and ecological consequences of a fire.
