05 Principles for Treatment of Opioid Addiction

On July 01, 2016, the Government of Vietnam promulgated Decree No. 90/2016/ND-CP stipulating the treatment of opioid addiction with alternative medications.

According to the provisions of Decree 90/2016/ND-CP, the treatment of opioid addiction is carried out based on the following principles:

- Opioid addiction is a chronic disease that requires long-term treatment.- The treatment of opioid addiction is only conducted when the opioid addict voluntarily participates in the treatment.- The treatment of opioid addiction is only conducted at facilities that have declared they meet the conditions for opioid addiction treatment according to the provisions of this Decree.- The treatment of opioid addiction must comply with professional guidelines as stipulated by the Minister of Health.- Opioid addiction treatment must go through the following stages: Initial dosing, dose adjustment or dose finding, maintenance treatment, dose reduction towards cessation of treatment.
