Pursuant to Article 4 of the Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary School Admission Regulations issued together with Circular 30/2024/TT-BGDDT regulating the methods of lower secondary school admission:

Article 4. Methods of Lower Secondary School Admission

  1. Annually, organize one (1) session for lower secondary school admission.
  1. Lower secondary school admission is conducted through the evaluation method.
  1. Evaluation criteria are specifically guided by the Department of Education and Training, ensuring fair, objective, transparent admission consistent with the actual local situation.

For lower secondary schools, multi-grade schools including lower secondary level (hereinafter collectively referred to as lower secondary schools) under a university, college, research institute, the evaluation criteria are directly managed and guided by the university, college, research institute, or implemented according to the guidance of the Department of Education and Training where the school is located.

From 2025, lower secondary school admissions are conducted through the evaluation method. Thus, from February 14, 2025, admissions to grade 6 will be executed solely through this evaluation method.

What are procedures for admission to grade 6 in 2025 in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Article 7 of the Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary School Admission Regulations issued together with Circular 30/2024/TT-BGDDT regulating the lower secondary school admission process:

Article 7. Process for Lower Secondary School Admission

  1. Chairman of the district-level People's Committee approves the lower secondary school admission plan. The plan includes the following basic contents: admission subjects; targets and admission areas; evaluation criteria; evaluation time and admission result announcement. This plan is published before March 31 each year.

For lower secondary schools under a university, college, research institute, the admission plan is decided directly by the Director of the university, Principal of the college, or Head of the research institute after being agreed upon with the Education and Training Department where the school is located.

  1. Based on the approved lower secondary school admissions plan, the lower secondary school admissions council constructs and publicly announces the school's admission plan; organizes the enrollment applications, reception, and prepares for the admission applications.
  1. The lower secondary school admissions council organizes the evaluation according to the approved admission plan; proposes the list of admitted students to the Principal for submission to the Head of the Education and Training Office for approval.

For lower secondary schools under a university, college, research institute, the list of admitted students is approved by the Director of the university, Principal of the college, or Head of the research institute.

The procedures for admission to grade 6 in 2025 are as follows:

Step 1: Approval of the lower secondary school admission plan.

The Chairman of the district-level People's Committee approves the lower secondary school admission plan.

The admission plan includes the following basic contents:

- Admission subjects

- Targets and admission areas

- Evaluation criteria

- Evaluation time and admission result announcement

The admission plan is published before March 31 each year.

For lower secondary schools under a university, college, research institute, the admission plan is decided directly by the Director of the university, Principal of the college, or Head of the research institute after being agreed upon with the Education and Training Department where the school is located.

Step 2: Construction and public announcement of the school's admission plan

Based on the approved lower secondary school admissions plan, the lower secondary school admissions council constructs and publicly announces the school's admission plan

Step 3: Organizing the enrollment applications, reception, and preparing for the admission applications.

Step 4: Organizing the evaluation according to the approved admission plan

Step 5: Propose the list of admitted students to the Principal for submission to the Head of the Education and Training Office for approval

For lower secondary schools under a university, college, research institute, the list of admitted students is approved by the Director of the university, Principal of the college, or Head of the research institute.

What is the Age for Students Entering Grade Six?

Pursuant to Article 28 of the Education Law 2019 regulating education levels and age:

Article 28. Education Levels and Age

  1. The education levels and age are regulated as follows:

a) Primary education is conducted over 5 years, from grade one to the end of grade five. The age for students entering grade one is 6 years and is calculated annually;

b) Lower secondary education is conducted over 4 years, from grade six to the end of grade nine. Students entering grade six must complete primary education. The age for students entering grade six is 11 years and is calculated annually;

c) Upper secondary education is conducted over 3 years, from grade ten to the end of grade twelve. Students entering grade ten must have a lower secondary school graduation diploma. The age for students entering grade ten is 15 years and is calculated annually.
