Are students required to take an international English paper before graduating in Vietnam?

In Article 2 of the Regulation on undergraduate education issued with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT, there are regulations on training programs and maximum study time as follows:

5. Maximum time limit for students to complete a course shall be stipulated in the training institution regulation but shall not be longer than twice the study duration according to the standard learning plan for the whole course for each mode of study. For students who take bridge programs and whose accumulated credits have been accounted for, maximum time limit for them to complete a course shall be determined by deducting the amount of study time corresponding to the completed academic load from the study duration according to the standard learning plan of the whole course.

a) The student has accumulated sufficient units of study and credits and completed other compulsory contents required by the training program and achieved the expected learning outcomes of the training program;

b) The student has average GPA or higher for the whole course;

c) At the time of graduation consideration, the student is not facing a criminal prosecution or suspended from study.

2. Principals shall issue graduation recognition decisions and award degrees to students eligible for graduation within 03 months starting from the time where the students become eligible and have fulfilled all obligations with their training institutions.

4. For students whose study time has exceeded the maximum permitted limit, if they are not yet eligible for graduation due to incomplete national defense - security or physical education unit of study or failure to meet foreign language or information technology standard, within 03 years after they complete their study, they may fulfill the missing requirements and apply for graduation.

In reality today, higher education institutions require students to meet graduation requirements by having a foreign language certificate (mostly an English certificate). However, for each school and each educational program, there will be different requirements for foreign language certificates in Vietnam.

Students who still lack a foreign language certificate to qualify for university graduation will have 3 years from the time they complete their study, they may fulfill the missing requirements and apply for graduation in Vietnam.

Thereby, it can be seen that the preparation and organization orientation for the 2024 high school graduation exam will be the same as preparation and organization of the 2023 high school graduation exam in Vietnam.

At the same time, Article 3 of the Regulation of high school graduation exam issued together with Circular 15/2020/TT-BGDDT stipulates high school graduation exam as follows:

Papers

The exam consists of 5 papers, including: 3 independent papers are: Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language; 1 paper of natural science (a combination of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology); 1 paper of social science (a combination of History, Geography, and Civic Education) with respect to students of compulsory education program at high school level or the papers of History and Geography with respect to students of continuing education program at high school level.

According to this Article, in 2024, the exam subjects in the 2024 high school graduation exam will be the same as in 2023, specifically the exam structure is as follows:

- The Natural Science exam includes 03 component subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology

Thus, in the 2024 high school graduation exam in Vietnam, students still have to take the mandatory foreign language test, in which they can choose to take the English paper. That means candidates will still have to take the English paper in the 2024 high school graduation exam.

How long does it take for the English paper in the 2024 high school graduation exam in Vietnam?

According to Article 4 of the Regulation of high school graduation exam issued together with Circular 15/2020/TT-BGDDT stipulating exam dates, exam schedule, exam contents, types of papers and time allotted for papers/subjects as follows:

1. Exam dates, exam schedule: stipulated in annual guidelines for administration of high school graduation exam of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET for short).

4. Time allotted for papers/subjects: 120 minutes for Literature; 90 minutes for Mathematics; 60 minutes for Foreign language; 50 minutes for each subject of the natural science and social science paper.

According to this Article, the time for candidates to take the English paper in the 2024 high school graduation exam is 60 minutes with a total of 50 questions in Vietnam.
