1. What are road markings?

Road markings are a form of signal to guide and control traffic in order to improve traffic safety and ability, according to Clause 1, Article 52 of National Technical Standards QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT.

2. Regulations on road markings in Vietnam

According to Article 52 of the National Technical Standards QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT regulations on road markings are as follows:

- Road markings can be used independently or can be combined with other types of road signs or traffic signal lights.

- Road markings include lines, letters, and drawings on the road surface, on sidewalks, on traffic works and some other parts of the road to regulate traffic order, limit the size of traffic works, and indicate the prescribed direction of traffic lanes.

- Road markings must ensure that the vehicle runs smoothly on the road, ensure the grip between the tires and the road surface, are not slippery, and are not higher than 6mm above the road surface.

- When used, the selection of road markings must ensure reasonable traffic organization for each route and be based on the width of the road surface, vehicle speed, traffic volume, and vehicles and pedestrians. traffic department to decide.

- For expressways, roads with a design speed of  60 km/h and roads with a V85 speed of 80 km/h or more, road markings must have reflective materials. Other types of roads, based on financial capacity and other requirements, can use reflective materials.

3. Classification of road markings in Vietnam

The classification of road markings is regulated according to Article 53 of National Technical Standards QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT as follows:

- Based on the location of use, road markings are divided into two types: lines on the ground (including markings on the road surface, lines along the road, crossroads, and other types of lines) and vertical lines, which:

+ The lines on the ground used to define different sections of the road are white, except for some lines specified in Annex G, which are yellow. In some cases, other colors can be used to increase the level of traffic warning on the road surface.

+ Vertical lines on sidewalks, traffic works, and some other parts of the road. This type of line is a combination of yellow and black lines or white and red lines.

- Based on the method of drawing, road markings are divided into three types as follows:

+ A line along the road is a line that runs parallel to the direction of the vehicle on the road.

+ A "crossroad" is a line that crosses the road or forms a diagonal angle with the direction of traffic;

+ Other types of bars are other types of symbols or forms.

- Based on the function and meaning of use, road markings include: signal line, warning line, guide line, speed reduction line.

- Road markings are classified as one of two types:

+ Marking on the road surface, the sidewalk (sidewalk), or at the lane boundary, including solid and broken lines;

+ Symbols of letters and pictures include letters, numbers, or drawings on the road surface.

4. The impact of road markings in Vietnam

The impact of road markings is specified in Article 55 of National Technical Regulation QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT as follows:

- When used independently, road users must obey the meaning of road markings.

- When using road markings in combination with signal lights and signs, road users must obey the meanings and commands of both road markings and signal lights and signs in the prescribed order.
