The Chevron marking, or the V-shaped vehicle channeling marking, is regulated in Appendix G of the National Technical Regulation QCVN 41:2024/BGTVT on Road Traffic Signs issued under Circular 51/2024/TT-BGTVT as follows:
Meaning of Use:
- The V-shaped vehicle channeling marking is used to demarcate sections of the road surface not meant for vehicles to travel on but for channeling traffic flows on the road.
- When marking 4.2 is used, vehicles must follow the designated route, and not encroach upon or cross the marking, except in emergency situations.
Mark Specifications:
- Marking 4.2 consists of parallel, solid, white lines, each 45 cm wide, with a distance of 100 cm between the edges of the lines, inclined at an angle of 135o counter-clockwise from the direction of vehicle movement.
- The marking that defines the boundary for the V-shaped vehicle channeling is a solid, white line with a stroke width of b = 20 cm.
Thus, when operating a vehicle, if a Chevron marking is observed, the vehicle must be directed along the specified route, and not encroach upon or cross the Chevron marking except in emergencies.
According to Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, the penalties for crossing chevron markings in Vietnam are as follows:
Thus, anyone operating a vehicle that cross chevron markings will be fined between 150,000 VND and 600,000 VND depending on the type of vehicle being operated.
Article 48 of the National Technical Regulation QCVN 41:2024/BGTVT provides general regulations for road markings:
- Road markings guide and control traffic to enhance safety and vehicular passage.
- Road markings can be used independently and may also combine with road signs or traffic signaling lights.
- Road markings include lines, scripts, and drawings on the road surface, curb, traffic structures, and other road parts to regulate traffic order and establish limits for traffic infrastructures, indicating prescribed directional paths for vehicle lanes.
- Road markings must ensure smooth vehicle travel, provide adequate tire-to-road adhesion, prevent skidding, and not exceed 6 mm above the road surface.
- When using or selecting road markings, compatibility with traffic organization on each route is essential, considering the road's width, vehicle speed, traffic volume, and pedestrian participation.
- For highways, roads with a design speed of ≥ 60 km/h, and roads with an 85th percentile speed (V85) of 80 km/h and above, road markings must have reflective materials. For other roads, reflective materials can be used based on financial capability and other requirements.
