Based on Article 3 of Circular 01/2024/TT-NHNN, each Vietnamese banknote will have a unique serial number, including a serial prefix and a natural number sequence in the quantity specified by the State Bank of Vietnam, as follows:
- The serial prefix is composed of 2 letters from the following 26 letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z.
- The main prefix is the serial prefix used for printing on banknotes as per the annual printing quantity and structure.
- The supplementary prefix is the serial prefix used for printing on replacement banknotes for defective ones.
- The principles of printing the serial number sequence during the money printing process are carried out as follows:
+ For the types of currency published by the State Bank of Vietnam prior to 2003 (including 5,000 VND, 2,000 VND, 1,000 VND, 500 VND, 200 VND, and 100 VND notes), the serial of these denominations will include the serial prefix and a natural number sequence of 07 digits printed from 0000001 onwards.
+ For the types of Vietnamese currency published by the State Bank of Vietnam from 2003 onwards (including 500,000 VND, 200,000 VND, 100,000 VND, 50,000 VND, 20,000 VND, 10,000 VND notes), the serial includes the serial prefix and a natural number sequence of 08 digits, wherein the two digits immediately following the serial prefix represent the last two digits of the year the note was produced, and the following 06 digits are a natural number sequence printed from 000001 onwards;
Example: If the number following the serial prefix is 17, it means that the Vietnamese note was produced in 2017. Similarly, if it is 16, it means it was produced in 2016.
Based on Article 6 of Circular 01/2024/TT-NHNN, the management of the serial number of new Vietnamese banknotes during the process of handing over and receiving money is regulated as follows:
In the process of handing over and receiving newly printed money
- The printing and minting establishments hand over newly printed money to the State Bank of Vietnam (Issuance and Treasury Department); hand over and receive newly printed money between Central Cash Offices; hand over and receive newly printed money between the Central Cash Office with the Transaction Office and the State Bank of Vietnam branches; hand over and receive newly printed money between State Bank of Vietnam branches.
The party handing over the new money must prepare a list of the serial numbers of the types of Vietnamese currency as stipulated in point c of this section, accompanied by a handover receipt or dispatch slip. The receiving party is responsible for checking and reconciling the list with the actual handover; if discrepancies are detected, the receiving party must notify the handing over party to agree on adjustments, ensuring consistency with the actual handover;
- When transferring newly printed money from the Issuance Reserve Fund to the Business Issuance Fund at the State Bank of Vietnam branches and vice versa, the warehouse keeper of the handing over party must prepare a list of the serial numbers of the types of currency as stipulated in point c of this section. The warehouse keeper of the receiving party is responsible for checking and reconciling the list with the actual handover; if discrepancies are detected, the receiving party must notify the handing over party to agree on adjustments, ensuring consistency with the actual handover;
- The serial number list made by the warehouse keeper of the handing over party must accurately reflect the following elements: handing over party, receiving party, type of currency, quantity, serial prefix, year of production, packaging, bundle, or other packaging specifications as regulated by the State Bank of Vietnam. This list is made in 2 copies, with each handing over, and receiving party retaining 1 copy.
Responsibility for monitoring, managing, and storing the information of the serial number of newly printed money
- The handing over and receiving parties are responsible for monitoring, managing, and storing the serial number information of the new money bundles, packages, or bundles that have been handed over and received at their unit;
- When the Transaction Office or State Bank of Vietnam branches release newly printed money with an intact sealed package to credit institutions, foreign bank branches, State Treasury, and other entities, the handing over party is responsible for managing and storing the serial number information of the newly printed money released to these units.
