From 2025, motorbikes running red lights in Vietnam could be fined up to 6,000,000 VND

According to the latest regulations in Vietnam, can running a red light on a motorcycle result in a fine of up to 6,000,000 VND? What are principles for participating in traffic in Vietnam?

From 2025, will running a red light on a motorbike in Vietnam result in fines up to 6,000,000 VND?

According to Clause 7, Article 7 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, there is a fine ranging from 4,000,000 VND to 6,000,000 VND for drivers committing the following violations:

- Driving in the opposite direction on a one-way street or on roads with a “No Entry” sign, except for the violations specified in point b of this clause and cases where priority vehicles are performing emergency duties as regulated; driving on sidewalks, except when crossing sidewalks to enter house or office premises;

- Driving onto highways, except for vehicles serving highway management and maintenance;

- Disobeying traffic light signals;

- Disobeying orders or instructions from traffic management or control personnel;

- Failing to yield or obstructing priority vehicles emitting priority signals on duty.

However, motorbike drivers running a red light causing traffic accidents will face a fine from 10,000,000 VND to 14,000,000 VND (point c, clause 10, Article 7 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP)

In addition to being fined, motorbike drivers running a red light will have 4 points deducted from their driving license. (point b, clause 10, Article 7 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP)

Thus, from 2025, motorbike drivers running a red light will face fines from 4,000,000 VND to 6,000,000 VND. In cases where running a red light causes a traffic accident, fines increase from 10,000,000 VND to 14,000,000 VND. Additionally, they will have 4 points deducted from their driving license.

From 2025, how many colors will traffic lights in Vietnam have?

According to Clause 4, Article 11 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety 2024 regarding compliance with traffic signals:

Article 11. Compliance with Traffic Signals

4. Traffic lights have 3 colors, including green, yellow, and red; with or without a time display. Road participants must comply as follows:

a) Green light means go; if a pedestrian or a person with disabilities in a wheelchair is on the road, the vehicle operator must slow down or stop to give way;

b) Yellow light means stop before the stop line; if already on the stop line or past it when the yellow light is on, proceed; if the yellow light is flashing, the vehicle operator may proceed but must observe, slow down, or stop to give way to pedestrians, people with disabilities in wheelchairs, or other vehicles;

c) Red light means stop.

Thus, from 2025, traffic lights will include 3 colors: green, yellow, and red. Green indicates the right to go, but one must yield to pedestrians or disabled persons in wheelchairs. Yellow requires stopping before the stop line but may proceed if already past it or if the light is flashing, while reducing speed and yielding. Red is a stop signal.

What are principles for participating in traffic in Vietnam?

Road traffic participants must follow the principles set out in Article 3 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety 2024 as follows:

- Comply with the Constitution, Vietnamese laws, and international treaties to which the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a member.

- Ensure road traffic order and safety, facilitate uninterrupted traffic flow, contribute to socio-economic development, and ensure national defense, security, and environmental protection; prevent violations of road traffic order and laws, traffic accidents, and congestion; protect the lives, health, and assets of individuals and organizations.

- Ensuring road traffic order and safety is the responsibility of agencies, organizations, and individuals.

- Road traffic participants must comply with laws on road traffic order and safety and other relevant laws, ensuring safety for themselves and others.

- All acts violating laws on road traffic order and safety must be promptly detected, prevented, and strictly dealt with according to legal provisions.

- The activities ensuring road traffic order and safety must be public, transparent, and convenient for citizens.

- Road traffic order and safety assurance tasks are carried out uniformly based on division, delegation, coordination closely between involved agencies, organizations, and individuals.
