Working time and annual leave time
1. The working time of primary school teachers in an academic year is 42 weeks, including:
a) 35 weeks for teaching and educational activities as per the academic year schedule.
b) 05 weeks for training and professional improvement.
c) 01 week for preparing for the new academic year.
d) 01 week for summarizing the academic year.
2. The working time of secondary school and high school teachers in an academic year is 42 weeks, including:
a) 37 weeks for teaching and educational activities as per the academic year schedule.
b) 03 weeks for training and professional improvement.
c) 01 week for preparing for the new academic year.
d) 01 week for summarizing the academic year.
2a. The working time of teachers at pre-university schools in an academic year is 42 weeks, including:
a) 28 weeks for teaching and educational activities as per the academic year schedule;
b) 12 weeks for training and professional improvement, creating materials, scientific research, and other activities as per the academic year schedule;

Teaching periods
Teaching periods are the number of theoretical or practical periods each teacher must teach in a week. Specifically:
1. The teaching periods for primary school teachers are 23 periods, for secondary school teachers are 19 periods, and for high school teachers are 17 periods;
2. The teaching periods for teachers at ethnic boarding schools are 17 periods at the secondary school level and 15 periods at the high school level;
The teaching periods for teachers at semi-boarding ethnic schools are 21 periods at the primary school level and 17 periods at the secondary school level;
The teaching periods for teachers at schools and classes for disabled or handicapped students are 21 periods at the primary school level and 17 periods at the secondary school level.
2a. The teaching periods for teachers at pre-university schools are 12 periods.
3. Teachers who hold the position of Head of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneer Organization at a grade I school teach 2 periods a week, at a grade II school teach 1/3 of the standard teaching periods, and at a grade III school teach 1/2 of the standard teaching periods for teachers of the same education level. The classification of general education schools is in accordance with current regulations.
Thus, the teaching periods for teachers at pre-university schools are 12 periods a week.
Are teachers at pre-university schools in Vietnam who take on additional professional duties entitled to a reduction in teaching periods?
Pursuant to Article 8 of the Working Regulations for General Education Teachers issued together with Circular 28/2009/TT-BGDDT (amended by clause 8 Article 1 Circular 15/2017/TT-BGDDT), the regulations are as follows:
Reduction in teaching periods for teachers with additional professional duties
1. Homeroom teachers at the primary school level are entitled to a reduction of 3 periods/week, at the secondary school and high school levels are entitled to a reduction of 4 periods/week.
2. Homeroom teachers at ethnic boarding schools at the secondary and high school levels are entitled to a reduction of 4 periods/week. Homeroom teachers at specialized and semi-boarding schools are entitled to a reduction of 4 periods/week. Homeroom teachers at schools and classes for disabled or handicapped students are entitled to a reduction of 3 periods/week.
2a. Homeroom teachers at pre-university schools are entitled to a reduction of 3 periods/week.
3. Teachers who are in charge of subject rooms are entitled to a reduction of 3 periods/subject/week.
4. Teachers who are in charge of school-wide cultural and physical education activities, school gardens, workshops, equipment rooms, libraries (if these positions do not have designated staff) are entitled to a reduction of 2 - 3 periods/week depending on the workload as decided by the principal.
5. Subject group leaders are entitled to a reduction of 3 periods/week.
5a. Deputy subject group leaders are entitled to a reduction of 1 period/week.
5b. Teachers who are heads of functional departments at pre-university schools are entitled to a reduction of 3 periods/week;
Teachers who are deputy heads of functional departments at pre-university schools are entitled to a reduction of 1 period/week.
Thus, homeroom teachers at pre-university schools are entitled to a reduction of 3 periods/week.
