What are the objectives of the Mathematics subject at the lower secondary level to help students achieve?
According to subsection 3, Section 3 of the General Education Program for the Mathematics subject issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives that lower secondary students need to achieve in Mathematics are as follows:
- Contributing to the formation and development of mathematical competence with the following requirements: stating and answering questions when reasoning, solving problems, performing reasonable reasoning when solving problems, proving mathematical propositions that are not too complex;
Using mathematical models (mathematical formulas, algebraic equations, diagrams, etc.) to describe situations appearing in some real-world problems that are not too complex;
Using mathematical language combined with ordinary language to express mathematical content as well as demonstrate evidence, methodologies, and reasoning results; being able to present ideas and how to use mathematical tools and resources to perform a learning task or to describe mathematical reasoning and proofs.
- Having basic mathematical knowledge and skills about:
+ Numbers and Algebra: Number system (from natural numbers to real numbers); calculation and use of calculation tools; algebraic language and symbols; transforming algebraic expressions, equations, systems of equations, inequalities; using function language to describe (model) some processes and phenomena in practice.
+ Geometry and Measurement: The content of Geometry and Measurement at this level includes Intuitive Geometry and Flat Geometry.
Intuitive Geometry continues to provide language, symbols, and descriptions (at an intuitive level) of practical objects (plane figures, solid figures); establishing some common geometric models; calculating some geometric elements; developing spatial imagination; solving some simple practical problems related to Geometry and Measurement.
Flat Geometry provides knowledge and skills (at a logical reasoning level) about geometric relationships and some common plane figures (points, straight lines, rays, line segments, angles, parallel lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles).
+ Statistics and Probability: Collecting, classifying, representing, analyzing, and processing statistical data; analyzing statistical data through frequency, relative frequency; identifying some simple statistical rules in practice; using statistics to understand basic concepts about the empirical probability of an event and the probability of an event; recognizing the significance of probability in practice.
- Contributing to helping students have initial understanding about professions related to Mathematics; having a sense of vocational orientation based on their abilities and interests, conditions, and circumstances; directing students after lower secondary school (continuing education, vocational training, or joining the workforce).
