Which mathematical abilities does the subject of Mathematics in the general education program in Vietnam help students develop?
As specified in Section 3 of the General Education Mathematics Curriculum issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:
General Objectives
The Mathematics curriculum helps students achieve the following main objectives:
a) Forming and developing mathematical competencies, including the following core components: the ability to think and reason mathematically; the ability to model mathematically; the ability to solve mathematical problems; the ability to communicate mathematically; the ability to use tools and means for learning mathematics.
b) Contributing to the formation and development of students’ essential qualities and general competencies, in levels appropriate to the subject and educational stage, as defined in the General Curriculum.
c) Having fundamental, essential knowledge and skills in general mathematics; developing the ability to solve inter-disciplinary, real-life problems involving mathematics and other subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Information Technology, Technology, History, Arts, etc.; creating opportunities for students to experience and apply mathematics in practical situations.
d) Having a relatively comprehensive understanding of the usefulness of mathematics in different professions, providing a basis for career orientation, and having the minimum competency to independently explore issues related to mathematics throughout their lives.
...
According to the above regulations, the objectives of the Mathematics subject in the general education curriculum help develop the following core mathematical competencies:
- The ability to think and reason mathematically;
- The ability to model mathematically;
- The ability to solve mathematical problems;
- The ability to communicate mathematically;
- The ability to use tools and means for learning mathematics.

What are objectives that primary school students in Vietnam need to achieve in the Mathematics subject?
According to Subsection 2 of Section 3 of the General Education Mathematics Curriculum issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives that primary school students need to achieve in the Mathematics subject are as follows:
- Contributing to the formation and development of mathematical competencies with the requirement to achieve: performing thinking operations at a simple level; posing and answering questions when reasoning, solving simple problems; selecting arithmetic operations and numerical formulas to present and express (speaking or writing) content, ideas, and problem-solving methods; using mathematical language combined with ordinary language and body gestures to express mathematical content in simple situations; using simple tools and means to perform simple mathematical learning tasks.
- Having the initial, essential basic mathematical knowledge and skills about:
+ Numbers and Calculations: Natural numbers, fractions, decimals, and arithmetic operations on these sets.
+ Geometry and Measurement: Observing, recognizing, describing shapes and characteristics (at a visual level) of some flat shapes and solid shapes in real life; creating some simple geometric models; calculating some geometric quantities; developing spatial imagination; solving some practical problems related to Geometry and Measurement (with common measurement quantities).
+ Statistics and Probability: Some basic elements of statistics and probability; solving some practical problems related to some basic elements of statistics and probability.
- Along with other subjects and educational activities such as: Ethics, Nature and Society, Experiential Activities, etc., contributing to students' initial understanding of some professions in society.

What are objectives that lower secondary school students in Vietnam need to achieve in the Mathematics subject?
According to Subsection 3 of Section 3 of the General Education Mathematics Curriculum issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives that lower secondary school students need to achieve in the mathematics subject are as follows:
- Contributing to the formation and development of mathematical competencies with the requirement to achieve: posing and answering questions when reasoning and solving problems, performing reasonable reasoning when solving problems, proving not-too-complex mathematical propositions; using mathematical models (mathematical formulas, algebraic equations, diagrams, etc.) to describe situations appearing in some not-too-complex practical problems; using mathematical language combined with ordinary language to express mathematical content as well as present evidence, reasoning methods, and results; presenting ideas and using tools and means for learning mathematics to perform a learning task or to express reasoning and mathematical proofs.
- Having the basic mathematical knowledge and skills about:
+ Numbers and Algebra: The number system (from natural numbers to real numbers); calculations and the use of calculation tools; algebraic language and symbols; transforming algebraic expressions, equations, systems of equations, inequalities; using the language of functions to describe (model) some processes and phenomena in real life.
+ Geometry and Measurement: The content of Geometry and Measurement at this level includes Visual Geometry and Plane Geometry.
Visual Geometry continues to provide language, symbols, and descriptions (at a visual level) of real-life objects (flat shapes, solid shapes); creating some common geometric models; calculating some geometric factors; developing spatial imagination; solving some practical problems related to Geometry and Measurement.
Plane Geometry provides knowledge and skills (at a logical reasoning level) about geometric relationships and some common flat shapes (points, lines, rays, line segments, angles, two parallel lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles).
+ Statistics and Probability: Collecting, classifying, representing, analyzing, and processing statistical data; analyzing statistical data through frequency, relative frequency; recognizing some simple statistical laws in practice; using statistics to understand basic concepts of experimental probability of an event and the probability of an event; recognizing the significance of probability in practice.
- Contributing to students' initial understanding of professions related to mathematics; fostering career orientation based on abilities and interests, conditions, and circumstances of themselves; orienting the streaming after lower secondary school (continuing to higher education, vocational training, or participating in the workforce).
