Which location did Nguyen Hue select as the battleground for the decisive battle with Siamese army?

Nguyen Hue chose Rach Gam - Xoai Mut (now part of Tien Giang province) as the battleground against Siamese forces in 1785.

* Reasons for choosing Rach Gam - Xoai Mut as the battleground against Siamese forces:

- Rach Gam and Xoai Mut are two small river branches connected to the Tien River, creating a network of waterways, making this an ideal place for ambushes and naval tactics.

- This area has a narrow riverbed with many islets and dense vegetation, providing favorable conditions for deploying troops and blocking the advance of Siamese forces.

- Additionally, Nguyen Hue was adept in naval warfare. By utilizing the waterway terrain, he could effectively organize ambushes by taking advantage of the small creeks and channels to encircle and destroy the enemy.

* Summary of the Rach Gam - Xoai Mut battle (1785):

- Progress of the Rach Gam - Xoai Mut battle:

+ In the Summer of 1784, in response to Nguyen Phuc Anh's plea for assistance, the King of Siam dispatched his two nephews, Chau Tang and Chau Suong, with 50,000 troops both naval and infantry, and 300 warships to invade our country on July 25, 1784. Nguyen Anh also rallied the former Nguyen dynasty officials to gather forces. Siamese forces continuously occupied positions from Rach Gia to Can Tho and paused at Sa Dec.

+ After 5 months (at the end of the Year of the Dog 1784), following their entry into our territory, the Siamese forces managed to control only half of the western Gia Dinh land. The My Tho citadel and the eastern part of Gia Dinh remained firmly under the control of Tay Son forces.

+ Late 1784, Tay Son King Nguyen Nhac sent Nguyen Hue with naval forces to the south to launch a counteroffensive, aiming to decisively clear Siamese-Nguyen forces from Gia Dinh.

+ The total Tay Son forces in Gia Dinh, including the garrison led by Truong Van Da and the newly reinforced naval fleet under Nguyen Hue, amounted to approximately 20,000, less than half the Siamese forces, not counting Nguyen Anh's own troops.

+ Using the "luring the tiger away from the mountain" strategy, Nguyen Hue ordered provocations to entice the Siamese-Nguyen forces from their Sa Dec base deep into the ambush area. Once the Siamese forces entered the trap, Tay Son naval forces suddenly attacked from two small rivers, Rach Gam and Xoai Mut, severing the enemy formation. Cannons from both riverbanks and Thoi Son islet fiercely bombarded, causing chaos among the Siamese fleet. Following the battle, nearly the entire Siamese naval fleet was destroyed, Nguyen Anh's forces disbanded and fled.

- Result of the Rach Gam - Xoai Mut battle:

+ Defeated over 50,000 Siamese-Nguyen troops, destroyed the entire enemy war fleet - over 300 vessels, forcing Chau Tang, Chau Suong, along with remnants, to flee to the northern bank of the My Tho River, reaching Bangkok by March 1785.

+ Nguyen Anh and the remaining troops had to flee and live in exile in Siam.

- Significance of the Rach Gam - Xoai Mut battle:

+ With the victory at Rach Gam - Xoai Mut, Tay Son forces achieved a decisive triumph, clearing the invaders from Gia Dinh land, reclaiming occupied territories, and thwarting the Siamese king’s ambitions towards our country’s southern extremities.

+ This battle not only demonstrated Nguyen Hue's strategic brilliance but also showcased creative application of tactics in warfare. The Rach Gam - Xoai Mut battle played a crucial role in defending the country and serves as a valuable lesson in Vietnamese military art.
