According to Clause 2, Article 4 of the Regulation on National Excellent Student Exams promulgated with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT, students eligible to participate in the Olympic team selection exam are high school students under one of the following categories:
- Selected by the Ministry of Education and Training from among students who have won prizes in the national excellent student exam of the same academic year, based on descending order of exam scores. The number of selected students in each subject shall not exceed eight (08) times the number of students needed for the national team to participate in the international Olympic in that subject.
- Students who did not participate in the national excellent student exam of the same academic year but were members of the national team participating in regional or international Olympics in the preceding academic year.

According to Article 5 of the Regulation on National Excellent Student Exams promulgated with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT, the subjects, content, format, and duration for the Olympic team selection exam are stipulated as follows:
Subjects, content, format, and exam duration
- Subjects:
a) For the national excellent student exam, the subjects include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, and Foreign Languages (English, Russian, French, Chinese). Exams for subjects with at least five (05) registered units should be considered. The Minister of Education and Training will decide on adjusting the subjects if necessary;
b) For the Olympic team selection exam, subjects include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics.
- Content: Within the general education program and the specialized teaching contents at the high school level; specifically, for the Olympic team selection exam, the content aligns with the international and regional Olympics.
- Format, exam duration:
a) National excellent student exam: Two sessions for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, and Foreign Languages; one session for Literature, History, Geography; exam duration is 180 minutes. Informatics is tested through programming on computers while other subjects are written exams: Foreign Languages include an additional speaking component, with five (05) minutes of preparation and five (05) minutes for recording;
b) Olympic team selection exam: Two sessions for each subject; additionally, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology have a practical session; exam duration for Informatics is 300 minutes per exam, Mathematics is 270 minutes per exam, and other subjects are 240 minutes per exam. Practical exam duration for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology is 180 minutes.
Thus, the subjects, content, format, and exam duration for the Olympic team selection exam are:
- Subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics.
- Content: Aligns with international and regional Olympics.
- Format and duration: Two sessions for each subject; Physics, Chemistry, and Biology have an additional practical session. Informatics: 300 minutes per exam, Mathematics: 270 minutes per exam, other subjects: 240 minutes per exam.
Practical exam duration for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology is 180 minutes.
What are regulations on selecting students into the Olympic teams in Vietnam?
According to Article 33 of the Regulation on National Excellent Student Exams promulgated with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT, the regulations for selecting students into Olympic teams are as follows:
- After completing the scoring of the Olympic team selection exams, sort the un-named exams by descending exam scores to select students into national teams for regional and international Olympics (for subjects without regional Olympic teams), ensuring the number of selected students matches the number of team members required.
- For subjects with regional Olympic teams, students for the international Olympic teams will be selected from those who have participated in the regional Olympic of the same year, based on the following principles:
+ Rank students by the total score from the Olympic team selection exam and the regional Olympic (scores converted to the same scale) in descending order, ensuring the number of selected students matches the number of team members required for the international Olympic team.
+ In cases where students have the same total score, the student with the higher regional Olympic score will be selected. If students have the same regional Olympic score, the Ministry of Education and Training will organize an additional test to determine the selection.
- The Director of the Quality Management Department is responsible for submitting the list of students for national Olympic teams participating in international and regional competitions to the Minister of Education and Training for approval.
