On August 1, 2024, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Decision 2045/QD-BGDĐT in 2024 regarding the framework for the school year 2024-2025 for preschool education, general education, and continuing education.

- Schools start earliest one week before the opening ceremony date. For first grade, schools start earliest two weeks before the opening ceremony date.
- The opening ceremony will be held on September 5, 2024.
- The first semester ends before January 18, 2025, and the academic year ends before May 31, 2025.
- The recognition of completion of the primary school program and the recognition of graduation from middle school will be completed before June 30, 2025.
- Enrollment in first-grade classes will be completed before July 31, 2025.
- The high school graduation exam in 2025 is expected to be held on June 26 and June 27, 2025.
Therefore, the school year 2024-2025 will start on September 5, 2024.

What birth year are first-grade students in the 2024-2025 school year?
Based on Clause 1, Article 28 of the Education Law 2019, the age of first-grade students is regulated as follows:
Levels and ages of general education
1. Levels and ages of general education are regulated as follows:
a) Primary education is conducted over 5 academic years, from the first grade to the fifth grade. The age of students entering the first grade is 6 years old, calculated by year;
b) Lower secondary education is conducted over 4 academic years, from the sixth grade to the ninth grade. Students entering the sixth grade must complete the primary education program. The age of students entering the sixth grade is 11 years old, calculated by year;
c) Upper secondary education is conducted over 3 academic years, from the tenth grade to the twelfth grade. Students entering the tenth grade must have a lower secondary education diploma. The age of students entering the tenth grade is 15 years old, calculated by year.
2. Students may be older than the regulated age in Clause 1 of this Article in the following cases:
a) Students who skip a grade due to intellectual development;
b) Students older than the regulated age due to repeating a class, geographical and socio-economic difficulties, being an ethnic minority, having disabilities, physical or intellectual weakness, being an orphan without a guardian, coming from a poor household, returning from abroad, or other cases as prescribed by law.

Thus, in accordance with the regulation, first-grade students in the 2024-2025 school year were born in 2018 (6 years old).
Note: The age of first-grade students might be higher in cases such as:
- Students repeating a class, or living in areas with special socio-economic difficulties;
- Students being an ethnic minority, having disabilities, physical or intellectual weakness;
- Students being an orphan without a guardian, coming from a poor household, returning from abroad, or other cases as prescribed by law.
