When do students in Hanoi return to school after Yagi Typhoon?
On the afternoon of September 8, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training issued Official Dispatch 3069/SGDDT-CTTT-KHCN to all educational institutions, students will return to schools tomorrow (September 9) if schools meet safety conditions.
To proactively address the aftermath of Yagi Typhoon and prepare conditions for students to return to school, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training requests as follows:
Following the directive of the Hanoi City Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue; subsequent to directive documents from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training: Official Dispatch No. 3057/SGDDT-CTTT-KHCN dated September 5, 2024, on proactively responding to Yagi Typhoon; and Official Dispatch No. 3061/SGDDT-CTTT-KHCN about proactive responses to Yagi Typhoon (Yagi) within the City; To proactively handle the aftermath of Yagi Typhoon and prepare conditions for students to return to school, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training requests Heads of the Education and Training departments of districts and district-level towns; Directors of Vocational Education Centers - Continuing Education Centers; Directors of foreign language, informatics, and life skills centers within the City; Principals of schools under the Department to focus on implementing the following:
(1) Units and schools quickly review and report damages (infrastructure, equipment, teaching materials, fences, green systems, school gates, roofs...) and report to competent authorities for funds to quickly address damages caused by Yagi Typhoon; at the same time, proactively organize general cleaning of schools and classes to address the aftermath of Yagi Typhoon; take measures to prevent diseases and ensure safety conditions for students returning to school.
(2) Schools that meet safe learning conditions should arrange for students to return to school from September 9, 2024 (Monday) according to the 2024 - 2025 school year schedule.
(3) Schools that do not meet safe learning conditions (due to the impact of Yagi Typhoon):
- Temporarily do not organize classes for students and report to competent authorities to immediately address damages caused by Yagi Typhoon. Based on actual conditions of the school, after addressing the aftermath of Yagi Typhoon, Principals should report to competent authorities for the decision to resume classes, ensuring the 2024 - 2025 school year schedule.
- During the period of not organizing classes, teachers are required to come to school to join local forces in cleaning up and addressing the aftermath of the typhoon; simultaneously, proactively plan make-up classes for students.

As such, Hanoi students will resume classes starting from September 9, 2024 if schools meet safe learning conditions.
Additionally, Hanoi students will return to classes based on decisions from competent authorities for areas affected by Yagi Typhoon and return after addressing the aftermath of the typhoon.

Will Hanoi students have make-up classes after Yagi Typhoon?
Based on Article 3 of Decision 2045/QD-BGDDT 2024 regulating implementation responsibilities:
Implementation Responsibilities
- The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and the centrally governed city decides:
a) The school year schedule for preschool, general education, and continuing education suitable to local realities.
b) Advance start date and extension of the school year not exceeding 15 days compared to the provisions in Article 1 of this Decision to ensure the implementation and completion of the preschool, general education, and continuing education program in case of natural disasters or epidemics; For special arising cases, report to the Ministry of Education and Training before implementation.
2. The Director of the Department of Education and Training:
a) Decides on student leave in cases of severe weather, natural disasters and arranges make-up classes; ensures teachers' leave during the school year.
b) Reports to the Ministry of Education and Training on:
- The preparation for the school year and the organization of the 2024 - 2025 school year opening before September 10, 2024;
- Summary of the implementation of key tasks and solutions of the 2024 - 2025 school year and the results of meeting the competition criteria.
Thus, if there is a break due to the typhoon, after it passes, the Director of the Department of Education and Training will arrange for students in Hanoi to have make-up classes based on the actual situation.
What is the 2024 - 2025 school year schedule for Hanoi?
According to Decision 4354/QD-UBND 2024, the school year schedule for the 2024 - 2025 school year for preschool, general education, and continuing education in Hanoi is as follows:
(1) Earliest start date is one week before the opening ceremony. For first grade, the earliest start date is two weeks before the opening ceremony.
(2) The City will organize the opening ceremony on September 5, 2024 (Thursday).
(3) The first semester ends no later than January 18, 2025; the program is completed, and the school year ends no later than May 31, 2025.
(4) Elementary program completion recognition and middle school graduation recognition before June 30, 2025.
(5) Complete admissions for new grade levels before July 31, 2025.
(6) The high school graduation exam in 2025 is expected to take place on June 26 and June 27, 2025.
(7) Other national exams are organized according to the Ministry of Education and Training's regulations and guidelines.
(8) Start date, end date of first semester (HKI); second semester (HKII) and end of the school year.
(9) Holidays during the school year
- Holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year) during the school year follow the Labor Code and annual guidance documents.
- Teachers' annual leave is taken during the summer break or can be arranged at other times throughout the year to suit specific conditions and the school year schedule.
