When do primary, lower and upper secondary school students in Vietnam return to school after summer in 2024?

Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam issued Decision 2045/QD-BGDDT of 2024 regarding the framework and timeline for the 2024-2025 academic year for preschool, general education, and continuing education applicable nationwide.

Article 1 of Decision 2045/QD-BGDDT of 2024 stipulates:

Issuing the framework and timeline for the 2024-2025 academic year for preschool, general education, and continuing education applicable nationwide as follows:

1. The earliest school attendance is 1 week before the opening ceremony. For first graders, the earliest school attendance is 2 weeks before the opening ceremony.

2. The opening ceremony will be held on September 5, 2024.

3. The first semester will end before January 18, 2025, and the academic year will conclude before May 31, 2025.

4. Primary school program completion and middle school graduation recognition will occur before June 30, 2025.

5. Enrollment for first-year classes will be completed before July 31, 2025.

6. The high school graduation exam for 2025 is expected to take place on June 26 and June 27, 2025.

7. Other national exams will be conducted according to the regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training.

It is expected that primary, middle, and high school students will return to school after the summer break at the end of August.

The specific timeline for returning to school in each locality will be determined by the Chairman of the People's Committees of province and centrally affiliated cities.

Section 3 of the General Education Program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT stipulates:

1. Basic Education Stage

1.1. Primary Education Level

a) Educational Content

Compulsory subjects and educational activities: Vietnamese; Mathematics; Morality; Foreign Language 1 (in grades 3, 4, 5); Natural and Social Sciences (in grades 1, 2, 3); History and Geography (in grades 4, 5); Science (in grades 4, 5); Informatics and Technology (in grades 3, 4, 5); Physical Education; Arts (Music, Drawing); Experiential Activities.

Elective subjects: Ethnic Minority Language, Foreign Language 1 (in grades 1, 2).

b) Educational Duration

Conducting two sessions/day; each day should consist of no more than 7 periods; each period lasts 35 minutes. Educational institutions that do not have sufficient conditions to organize two sessions/day shall implement the educational plan as guided by the Ministry of Education and Training.

What is the duration of general education program in Vietnam?

According to Clause 1, Article 28 of the Education Law of 2019 on levels of education and age:

Levels of education and age of general education

1. The levels of education and age of general education are stipulated as follows:

a) Primary education is conducted over 5 academic years, from grade 1 to grade 5. The age of students entering grade 1 is 6 years, calculated by year;

b) Middle education is conducted over 4 academic years, from grade 6 to grade 9. Students entering grade 6 must have completed the primary program. The age of students entering grade 6 is 11 years, calculated by year;

c) High education is conducted over 3 academic years, from grade 10 to grade 12. Students entering grade 10 must have a middle education graduation certificate. The age of students entering grade 10 is 15 years, calculated by year.
