What Vietnamese language knowledge do 4th-grade students in Vietnam have when studying Vietnamese language? What are the latest 4th grade Vietnamese textbooks?

What Vietnamese language knowledge do 4th-grade students in Vietnam have when studying Vietnamese language?

Based on Subsection 2, Section 5 of the general education program for the subject of Literature issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, 4th grade students have the following Vietnamese knowledge when studying Vietnamese:

- Rules for writing the names of agencies and organizations

- Vocabulary by topics

- Use of dictionaries, how to find words and meanings of words in dictionaries

- Meaning of some easily understandable idioms

- Meaning of some common Sino-Vietnamese elements

- The effect of word choice in conveying meaning

- Nouns, verbs, adjectives: characteristics and functions

- Proper nouns and common nouns: characteristics and functions

- Sentences and the main components of sentences: characteristics and functions

- Sentence adverbs: characteristics and functions (adding information)

- Uses of the dash (placed at the beginning of lines to mark listed ideas); hyphens (connect words in a compound name); quotation marks (mark the title of a work or document); parentheses (mark explanatory parts)

- Personification: characteristics and effects

- The thematic sentence of a paragraph: characteristics and functions

- Three-part structure (introduction, body, conclusion) of a text: characteristics and functions of each part

- Text types and genres

+ Narratives recounting an event the writer witnessed; narratives recounting a story, illustrated with pictures

+ Descriptive essays: descriptions of animals and plants

+ Paragraphs expressing emotions and feelings about a character

+ Paragraphs expressing opinions about a story, character, or event, stating reasons for the opinions

+ Instructional texts for performing a task; invitations, applications, letters, work reports

- Information through images and figures (non-verbal means of communication)

Additionally, some literary knowledge in Vietnamese for 4th grade includes:

- Themes

- Character traits

- Imagery in poetry

- Dialogue in literary scripts

What is the age of 4th Grade students in Vietnam?

Based on Article 33 of the Primary School Regulations issued together with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT, the age of primary school students is regulated as follows:

Age of primary school students

  1. The age for students entering first grade is 6 years and is calculated by year. Disabled children, children with physical or intellectual underdevelopment, children from areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions, ethnic minority children, orphans with no support, children returning from abroad, and children of foreigners studying or working in Vietnam may enter the first grade at an older age than prescribed, but not more than 3 years older. Cases where children enter first grade more than 3 years older than the prescribed age will be decided by the head of the Department of Education and Training.
  1. Primary school students may study at an older age than prescribed in cases where students are repeating a grade, students from areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions, ethnic minority students, disabled students, physically or intellectually underdeveloped students, orphans with no support, children returning from abroad, and other cases as prescribed by law.

Thus, generally, the age for entering first grade is 6 years, calculated by year, and if students progress to the next grade each year, then 4th grade students are 9 years old.

However, 4th grade students may be older than the prescribed age in cases where the students repeat a grade, come from areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions, are ethnic minorities, are disabled, have physical or intellectual underdevelopment, are orphans with no support, return from abroad, or other cases as prescribed by law.
