According to Clause 3, Article 28 of the Education Law 2019, the levels and ages of general education are stipulated as follows:

1. The levels and ages of general education are stipulated as follows:
a) Primary education is conducted over 5 school years, from grade one to the end of grade five. The age for entering grade one is 6 years old, counted by the year;
b) Lower secondary education is conducted over 4 school years, from grade six to the end of grade nine. Students entering grade six must complete the primary education program. The age for entering grade six is 11 years old, counted by the year;
c) Upper secondary education is conducted over 3 school years, from grade ten to the end of grade twelve. Students entering grade ten must have a lower secondary education diploma. The age for entering grade ten is 15 years old, counted by the year.

The basic education stage includes primary education and lower secondary education; the career-oriented education stage is upper secondary education. Students in vocational schools can study the amount of general upper secondary cultural knowledge.

According to Section 5 of the General Program issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT (amended and supplemented by Clause 1, Article 1 of Circular 13/2022/TT-BGDDT), the orientation of the content of natural science education in the career-oriented education stage in Vietnam is as follows:
Natural science education is conducted through the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in grades 10, 11, and 12. These subjects belong to the group of natural science subjects chosen by students according to career orientation, personal interests, and capabilities.
Each subject program helps students continue to develop natural science competencies in specific aspects (physics, chemistry, biology); while ensuring the development of knowledge and skills based on the common competencies and natural science competencies formed in the basic education stage, it also meets the requirements of career orientation towards specific professions.

Compulsory subjects and educational activities: Literature; Mathematics; Foreign Language 1; History; Physical Education; National Defense and Security Education; Experiential, career-oriented activities; Local education content.
Elective subjects: Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Informatics, Music, Fine Arts.
Students choose 4 subjects from the elective subjects.
Study specializations: Each subject of Literature, Mathematics, History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Informatics, Music, Fine Arts has several special study subjects that form a group of specialized study subjects to implement the deep differentiation requirements, helping students enhance knowledge and practical skills, apply learned knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems, meeting career orientation requirements. The duration for each special study subject is 10 or 15 periods; the total duration for a group of special study subjects for one subject is 35 periods per school year. In each grade 10, 11, 12, students choose 3 groups of special study subjects of 3 appropriate subjects according to their aspirations and the school's organizational capacity.
Schools can construct subject combinations from the subjects and the special study subjects mentioned above to meet the needs of learners and ensure the conditions of teacher staff, facilities, and teaching equipment of the school.
