What is the number of credits of a 4-year university program in Vietnam?

Based on Clause 2, Article 7 of Circular 17/2021/TT-BGDDT, the study workload is regulated as follows:

Study Workload

1. The workload of the training program, each component, or each subject in the training program is determined by the number of credits.

a) One credit is equivalent to 50 standard hours of student's learning activities, including classroom attendance, guided learning, self-study, research, experience, and tests or evaluations;

b) For classroom teaching activities, one credit requires at least 15 teaching hours or 30 hours of practice, experiments, discussions where one classroom hour equals 50 minutes.

2. The minimum workload of a training program must comply with the requirements of the Vietnamese National Qualification Framework. To be specific:

a) Undergraduate program: 120 credits, plus physical education, national defense-security education according to current regulations;

b) Specialized postgraduate programs at level 7: 150 credits, plus physical education, national defense-security education according to current regulations; or 30 credits for those with bachelor's degrees in related fields;

c) Master's program: 60 credits for those with bachelor's degrees in related fields;

d) Doctoral program: 90 credits for those with master's degrees, or 120 credits for those with bachelor's degrees in related fields.

3. The minimum workload for dual-major training programs must add 30 credits, and for the major-minor training programs must add 15 credits compared to the corresponding single-major training program.

Thus, based on the above regulation, a 4-year undergraduate program requires 120 credits, plus the additional credits for physical education, and national defense-security education as per current regulations.

Regulations on evaluating and grading university students at the beginning of a new academic year in Vietnam

Based on Clause 3, Article 9 of the University Training Regulation issued with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT, the rules on evaluation and calculation of subject scores are as follows:

* University Students' Subject Scores

University students' subject scores are calculated from the total component scores multiplied by their corresponding weights, rounded to one decimal place, and are graded as follows, except for cases specified in point d clause 3 Article 9 of the University Training Regulation issued with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT.

- Pass grades, applied to subjects counted towards the average grade point, include:

+ A: from 8.5 to 10.0;

+ B: from 7.0 to 8.4;

+ C: from 5.5 to 6.9;

+ D: from 4.0 to 5.4.

- Pass grade without detailed level, applied to subjects that only require a pass and are not counted towards the average grade point:

+ P: from 5.0 and above.

- Fail grade:

+ F: below 4.0

- Special cases using letter grades not counted towards the average grade point:

+ I: Incomplete score due to approved exam or test postponement;

+ X: Incomplete score due to insufficient data;

+ R: Subject exempted and credits recognized.

* Classification of Academic Performance for Students

Based on Clause 5, Article 10 of the University Training Regulation issued with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT, the academic performance of students is classified according to the semester GPA, academic year GPA, or cumulative GPA as follows:

- Using the 4-point scale:

+ From 3.6 to 4.0: Excellent;

+ From 3.2 to less than 3.6: Very Good;

+ From 2.5 to less than 3.2: Good;

+ From 2.0 to less than 2.5: Average;

+ From 1.0 to less than 2.0: Poor;+ Below 1.0: Very Poor.

- Using the 10-point scale:

+ From 9.0 to 10.0: Excellent;

+ From 8.0 to less than 9.0: Very Good;

+ From 7.0 to less than 8.0: Good;

+ From 5.0 to less than 7.0: Average;

+ From 4.0 to less than 5.0: Poor;

+ Below 4.0: Very Poor.

1. At the end of each main semester, students are given academic warnings based on several conditions such as:

a) Total credits failed in the semester exceeding 50% of the registered academic load for the semester, or the total credit debt from the beginning of the course exceeding 24;

b) Semester GPA below 0.8 for the first semester of the course, below 1.0 for subsequent semesters;

1. At the end of each academic year, students are considered to be making normal academic progress and allowed to advance to the subsequent academic year if both of the following conditions are met:

a) Academic year GPA of 1.0 and above for the first year, 1.2 and above for the second year, and 1.4 for the third year onwards;

b) Total credit debt from the beginning of the course not exceeding 16.

Thus, based on the above regulations, university students are allowed to owe up to 16 credits from the beginning of the course for the annual system and up to 24 credits for the credit-based education system.
