What is the formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid? When do students in Vietnam learn the formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid?

According to regulations, what is the formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid? When do students in Vietnam learn the formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid?

What is the formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid?

The formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid is as follows:

Formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid

S = (a + b) × h / 2

*Where:

S: Area of the trapezoid

a: Length of the longer base

b: Length of the shorter base

h: Height of the trapezoid

*Explanation:

(a + b): We calculate the sum of the lengths of the two bases of the trapezoid.

(a + b) × h: Calculate the area of a rectangle whose length is the sum of the lengths of the two bases and the width is the height of the trapezoid.

(a + b) × h / 2: Since the trapezoid is just half of the rectangle calculated above, we divide the result by 2 to get the area of the trapezoid.

*Example:

A trapezoid has a longer base of 8cm, a shorter base of 6cm, and a height of 5cm. Calculate the area of the trapezoid.

*Solution:

Applying the formula: S = (8 + 6) × 5 / 2 = 35 cm²

Thus, the area of the trapezoid is 35 cm².

*Visualize the trapezoid as a "bisected" rectangle:

Total of the two bases (a + b): If you imagine joining the two side triangles of the trapezoid together, you will get a new rectangle. The length of the base of this new rectangle is equal to the sum of the lengths of the two bases of the trapezoid.

Height (h): The height of this new rectangle is still the height of the trapezoid.

Divide by 2: Since the trapezoid occupies only half of the area of the new rectangle, we must divide the result by 2.

*Note: Information is for reference only./.

When do students in Vietnam learn the formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid?

Based on Section IV of the Mathematics Curriculum promulgated together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:

Visual Geometry

Plane Shapes and Solid Figures

Observe, recognize, and describe the shapes and characteristics of some simple plane shapes and solid figures.

- Recognize trapezoids, circles, and some types of triangles such as acute, right, obtuse, and equilateral triangles.

- Recognize the net of a cube, rectangular prism, and cylinder.

Practice drawing, assembling, and creating shapes related to some of the plane shapes and solid figures learned

- Draw trapezoids, parallelograms, and rhombuses (using a grid).

- Draw the altitude of a triangle.

- Draw a circle with a given center and radius or diameter.

- Solve some problems related to measuring, drawing, assembling, and creating shapes related to some of the plane shapes and solid figures learned, integrating the application of geometry in real life, related to subjects such as Art, Technology, and Information Technology.

- Perform conversions and calculations with volume measurements (cm3, dm3, m3) and time measurements.

- Calculate the area of triangles and trapezoids.

Thus, according to the above regulations, the formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid is taught in the grade 5 Math subject.

Is it required to ensure the streamline and modern when designing the grade 5 Math curriculum in Vietnam?

Based on Section 2 of the Mathematics Curriculum promulgated together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:

The Mathematics curriculum adheres to the fundamental regulations set forth in the overall program;

Inherits and promotes the advantages of the current curriculum and previous programs, selectively incorporates the curriculum development experience of advanced countries, and approaches the achievements of educational science, considering the economic and social conditions of Vietnam.

At the same time, the Mathematics curriculum emphasizes the following viewpoints:

- Ensure conciseness, practical relevance, modernity

The Mathematics curriculum ensures conciseness, practical relevance, and modernity by reflecting the essential contents that must be addressed in the general education system, meeting the need for world understanding as well as learners' interests and hobbies, suitable to the world’s approach today. The curriculum adheres to the spirit of “mathematics for everyone,” where everyone can learn Mathematics but each person can learn Math in ways suitable to their preferences and individual abilities.

The Mathematics curriculum focuses on applicability, connecting with real-life or other subjects and educational activities, especially those aimed at implementing STEM education, aligning with modern development trends in economics, science, social life, and globally pressing issues (such as climate change, sustainable development, financial education,...).

This is also reflected through practical and experiential activities in mathematics education in various forms such as: conducting projects and study projects about Math, especially projects and study projects about the application of mathematics in real life.

Organizing math games, math clubs, forums, seminars, math competitions,... create opportunities to help students apply their knowledge, skills, and personal experiences to real-life situations creatively.

Thus, the grade 5 Math curriculum, in particular, needs to be streamlined and modern.
