Note: The earliest school return date is one week before the opening day. For first-grade students, the earliest return date is two weeks before the opening day.

- The first semester will end before January 18, 2025, and the school year will end before May 31, 2025.

- The primary education program completion consideration and lower secondary school graduation recognition shall be done before June 30, 2025.

- Enrollment in entry-level classes must be completed before July 31, 2025.

- The upper secondary school graduation examinations for 2025 are expected to take place on June 26 and June 27, 2025.

Therefore, the start date of the new school year is September 5, with the expected school return schedule for students nationwide being 1-2 weeks before the opening ceremony. The specific time will depend on the education programs of each school and local regulations.

According to Article 2 of Decision 2045/QD-BGDDT in 2024 concerning the principles for developing the 2024-2025 school year plan in localities, the plan for the back-to-school schedule after summer is as follows:

- The school year plan must ensure a total of 35 studying weeks (18 weeks for the first semester, and 17 weeks for the second semester).

- The school year plan must be suitable for the local characteristics and practical conditions.

- Holidays and Tet breaks are implemented as per the Labor Code 2019 and annually updated directives.

- Teachers' annual leave must be arranged during the summer break or could be interspersed at other times of the year to match the specific characteristics and plan of the local school year.

- The school year plan must ensure consistency across educational levels within an area, particularly in multi-level schools.

How many teaching periods are required for teachers in the new school year in Vietnam?

According to Article 6 of the working regime regulation for general education teachers issued with Circular 28/2009/TT-BGDDT (amended by Clause 5, Article 1 Circular 15/2017/TT-BGDDT) regarding teaching periods norm:

The teaching periods norm is the number of theoretical or practical periods each teacher must teach in a week. Specifically:

  1. The teaching periods norm for primary teachers is 23 periods, lower secondary school teachers is 19 periods, and upper secondary school teachers is 17 periods;
  1. The teaching periods norm for teachers at ethnic boarding schools is 17 periods at the lower secondary level and 15 periods at the upper secondary school level;

The teaching periods norm for teachers at semi-boarding ethnic schools is 21 periods at the primary level and 17 periods at the lower secondary level;

The teaching periods norm for teachers at schools/classes for the disabled or handicapped is 21 periods at the primary level and 17 periods at the lower secondary level.

2a. The teaching periods norm for teachers at preparatory university schools is 12 periods.

  1. Teachers who are in charge of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneer Organization in first-rank schools teach 2 periods a week, in second-rank schools teach 1/3 of the norm, and in third-rank schools teach half of the norm for teachers at the same educational level. The classification of schools follows current regulations.

Therefore, the teaching periods norm for each teacher in the new school year 2024-2025 based on the weekly norm is as follows:

- The teaching periods norm for primary teachers is 23 periods/week.

- lower secondary school teachers are 19 periods/week.

- upper secondary school teachers are 17 periods/week.

What are the current qualifications required to become a teacher in Vietnam?

According to Article 72 of the Education Law 2019, the standard qualifications for teachers are as follows:

  1. Standard qualifications for teachers are defined as follows:

a) Preschool teachers must have a college degree or higher in early childhood education;

b) Primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary school teachers must have a bachelor’s degree or higher in teacher training. For subjects without enough teachers holding a bachelor’s degree in teacher training, it is required to have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and a certificate in pedagogical training;

c) University teachers must have a master’s degree; lecturers and supervisors of master’s thesis and doctoral dissertations must have a doctoral degree;

d) The standard qualifications for teachers in vocational education are defined in the Law on Vocational Education.

  1. The Government of Vietnam defines the roadmap for raising the standard qualifications of preschool, primary, and lower secondary school teachers stated at points a and b, clause 1 of this Article. The Minister of Education and Training and the Minister of Labour - Invalids and Social Affairs, within their authority and responsibilities, shall regulate the use of teachers who do not meet the requirements of clause 1 of this Article.

To become a teacher, one must meet the 04 standard qualifications defined in clause 1, Article 72 of the Education Law 2019.

The roadmap for raising the standard qualifications for preschool, primary, and lower secondary school teachers is guided by Decree 71/2020/ND-CP.
