Based on Article 33 of the Regulation on lower secondary schools, upper secondary schools, and multi-level schools issued together with Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT,  the age of students in lower secondary schools are as follows:

Age of lower secondary school students

1. The age for students entering grade 6 is 11 years old. The age for students entering grade 10 is 15 years old. For students who have skipped grades in previous school levels or students entering a school level at an age higher than the stipulated age, the age for entering grade 6 and grade 10 is adjusted based on the graduation age of the previous school level.

2. Students who are ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, students with special difficult circumstances, students returning from abroad may enter a school level at an age up to 3 years older than the stipulated age.

3. Students shall not be retained more than 3 times in a single school level.

4. Students with good health and rapid intellectual development may start school early or skip grades within the school level. The procedure for each specific case is as follows:

a) Parents or guardians submit a request to the school.

b) The principal establishes an assessment and advisory council consisting of representatives of the school leadership and the school parents' association, as well as the teachers of the classes the student is currently attending.

c) Based on the council's assessment and advice, the principal considers and makes a decision.

5. Students within the stipulated age returning from abroad, children of foreigners working in Vietnam are entitled to study at local lower secondary schools or other lower secondary schools if the school has the capacity to accept them. The procedure for each specific case is as follows:

a) Parents or guardians submit a request to the school.

b) The principal organizes the assessment of student capability and places them in appropriate classes.

The ages in the year 2024 is as follows:

According to the Lunar Calendar 2024, grade 7 students are 13 years old.
According to the Solar Calendar 2024, grade 7 students are 12 years old.

Note: except for cases where students are retained, allowed to skip classes, or start school at an age different from the stipulated age.

1. Basic Education Stage

1.1. Primary Education

a) Educational content

Mandatory subjects and educational activities: Vietnamese; Mathematics; Ethics; Foreign Language 1 (in grades 3, 4, 5); Science and Society (in grades 1, 2, 3); History and Geography (in grades 4, 5); Science (in grades 4, 5); Information Technology and Technology (in grades 3, 4, 5); Physical Education; Arts (Music, Art); Experiential Activities.

Optional subjects: Ethnic Minority Languages, Foreign Language 1 (in grades 1, 2).

b) Education duration

Teaching is conducted in 2 sessions/day, with a maximum of 7 periods per day; each period lasts 35 minutes. Educational institutions that do not yet meet the conditions to organize teaching in 2 sessions/day shall implement the education plan according to the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Training.

a) Educational content

Mandatory subjects and educational activities: Literature; Mathematics; Foreign Language 1; Civic Education; History and Geography; Natural Sciences; Technology; Information Technology; Physical Education; Arts (Music, Art); Experiential Activities and Career Orientation; Local Educational Content.

Optional subjects: Ethnic Minority Languages, Foreign Language 2.

b) Education duration

Each day students have 1 session, with a maximum of 5 periods per session; each period lasts 45 minutes. Schools that meet the necessary conditions are encouraged to conduct teaching in 2 sessions/day according to the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Training.

What are the 7 prohibitions for grade 7 students in Vietnam?

According to Article 37 of the Regulation on lower secondary schools, upper secondary schools, and multi-level schools issued together with Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT, there are 7 prohibitions for grade 7 students:

(1) Insulting the dignity and reputation, or infringing the body, of teachers, staff, other individuals, and other students.

(2) Cheating in learning, assessments, examinations, and admissions.

(3) Buying, selling, and using alcohol, beer, tobacco, narcotics, and other stimulants, as well as fireworks and flammable explosives.

(4) Using mobile phones and other devices during class time that are not for learning purposes and without teacher’s permission.

(5) Fighting, disturbing order, and security in schools and public places.

(6) Using and exchanging cultural products with violent, obscene content; using toys or engaging in games harmful to one’s healthy development.

(7) Students are prohibited from engaging in other prohibited behaviors according to the law.
