What is Polymer? In Vietnam, what is the grade at which the Chemistry curriculum covers Polymer?

What is Polymer?

Polymers are organic compounds with a very high molecular mass, formed from many linked monomers. Simply, polymers are "long chains" created by the repeated linking of smaller structural units.

What is Polymer?

Key characteristics of polymers:

Large molecular mass: Polymer molecules are very large, many times larger than typical molecules.

Chain structure: Monomers link together to form long chains, which can be linear, branched, or network chains.

Diverse characteristics: Depending on the monomer type and chain structure, polymers exhibit varying physical and chemical properties. For example: strength, flexibility, heat resistance, electrical insulation...

Examples of polymers:

Natural: Starch, cellulose, protein...

Synthetic: Polyethylene (PE), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Polystyrene (PS)...

Applications of polymers:

Polymers are found in many products we use every day, from simple items like plastic bags, and plastic bottles to high-tech products like engineering plastics, and synthetic fibers.

Industry: Production of plastics, rubber, synthetic fibers, paint...

Daily life: Plastic bags, plastic bottles, household items, clothing, construction materials...

Why are polymers widely used?

Flexibility: Easily shaped and bent.

Lightweight: Reduces the load on products.

Thermal and electrical insulation: Protects electronic devices.

Durable, corrosion-resistant: Increases product lifespan.

Low cost: Easy to produce and process.

What is the grade at which the Chemistry curriculum covers Polymer?

Under the General Education Program for Chemistry issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT on the 12th-grade Chemistry curriculum:

POLYMER

General introduction about polymers

- Able to write the structural formulas and name some commonly encountered polymers (polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), polybutadiene, polyisoprene, poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(phenol formaldehyde) (PPF), capron, nylon-6,6).

- Describe the characteristics of physical properties (state, melting point, mechanical properties) and chemical properties (chain scission reactions (starch, cellulose, polyamide, polystyrene), chain extension (rubber vulcanization), maintaining the chain of certain polymers).

- Present the methods of polymerization and polycondensation to aggregate some commonly encountered polymers.

Plastics and composite materials

- Explain the concept of plastics.

- Present the molecular composition and preparation reaction of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), polybutadiene, polyisoprene, poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(phenol formaldehyde) (PPF).

- Present the application of plastics and the consequences of overusing plastics in life and production. State some measures to limit the use of certain types of plastics to reduce environmental pollution and protect human health.

....

In the 12th-grade Chemistry curriculum, students will learn about the general introduction to polymers to be able to write structural formulas, remember the names of certain polymers, and describe physical properties (state, melting point, mechanical properties), and chemical properties...

Thus, the 12th-grade Chemistry curriculum covers Polymer.
