Interpretation of Terms

In this Circular, the terms below are defined as follows:

1. Assessment of students' training and learning outcomes is an activity of collecting, analyzing, processing information through observation, monitoring, exchange, examination, and commenting on the process of training and learning of students in mandatory subjects, elective subjects, compulsory educational activities, and local education content (hereinafter collectively referred to as subjects) in the general education program; providing guidance, counseling, and motivation for students; confirming students' achieved results; providing feedback for teachers and students to adjust the teaching and educational process (hereinafter collectively referred to as teaching).

2. Continuous assessment is the activity of assessing students' training and learning outcomes during the implementation of teaching activities according to the required standards specified in the general education program; providing feedback for teachers and students to promptly make adjustments in the teaching process; supporting and promoting students' progress; confirming students' achievements during the process of performing training and learning tasks.

Periodic assessment is the activity of assessing training and learning outcomes after a phase within the school year to determine the level of completion of students' training and learning tasks according to the required standards specified in the general education program; providing feedback for education management staff, teachers, and students to adjust teaching activities; confirming students' achieved results.

What are the regulations on periodic assessment of lower secondary school students in Vietnam?

Based on Clause 1, Article 7 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, the periodic assessment of lower secondary school students is regulated as follows:

- Periodic assessment (not conducted for thematic study groups), including mid-term assessment and end-term assessment, is conducted through: tests (on paper or computer), practical exercises, and learning projects.

- The duration for tests (on paper or computer) for subjects (excluding thematic study groups) with up to 70 periods per school year is 45 minutes; for subjects (excluding thematic study groups) with more than 70 periods per school year, the duration is from 60 to 90 minutes; for specialized subjects, the duration is up to 120 minutes.

- For assessments based on scores, the test papers (on paper or computer) must be prepared based on a matrix and specification of the test, meeting the required standards of the subject specified in the general education program.

- For assessments based on comments, practical exercises, and learning projects (on paper or computer), there must be guidance and evaluation criteria according to the required standards of the subject specified in the general education program before implementation.

- In each semester, each subject assessed by comments has one mid-term assessment and one end-term assessment.

What is the responsibility of subject teachers in periodic assessment of lower secondary school students in Vietnam?

Based on Clause 1, Article 19 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, the responsibilities of subject teachers are specified as follows:

- Conduct continuous assessments; participate in periodic assessments according to the Principal's assignment; directly record or input scores and assessment levels into the Student Monitoring and Assessment Record (by class), the Teacher's Student Monitoring and Assessment Record.

- Calculate the average score for subjects (for subjects combining comment assessment and score assessment); summarize the assessment level (for subjects assessed by comments) according to the semester and the entire school year; directly record or input scores and assessment levels into the Student Monitoring and Assessment Record (by class), the Teacher's Student Monitoring and Assessment Record, and the Student Report Card.

- Provide comments on students' training outcomes as stipulated in Point b, Clause 1, Article 8 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT for the homeroom teacher.
