What is a Narrative Perspective? How to Identify a Narrative Perspective?
The narrative perspective is the communicative stance that the storyteller uses when recounting a story. The choice of perspective determines how the story is conveyed to the reader or listener and significantly affects their perception of the story.
In literature, there are 3 narrative perspectives, identified as follows:
1. First-Person Narrative:
- Characteristics: The narrator uses "tôi"or "chúng tôi" to recount the story from their own viewpoint.
- Identification Method: When reading, you will notice the narrator using the pronouns "tôi"or "we." For example: "Tôi đã nhìn thấy điều đó" and "Chúng tôi đã trải qua những ngày tháng khó khăn."
- Effect: Creates a sense of closeness, authenticity, and high personal relevance, aiding readers to empathize easily with the main character.
2. Second-Person Narrative:
- Characteristics: The narrator uses the pronoun "bạn" to narrate, creating the feeling of speaking directly to the reader.
- Identification Method: When reading, you notice the narrator using the pronoun "bạn". For example: Bạn sẽ cảm thấy như thế nào nếu điều đó xảy ra với bạn?"
- Effect: Creates a sense of closeness, authenticity, and high personal relevance, aiding readers to empathize easily with the main character.
3. Third-Person Narrative:
- Characteristics: The narrator stands outside the story, using character names or pronouns like "anh", "cô", "họ" to recount events.
- Identification Method: When reading, you will notice the narrator using character names or pronouns like "anh", "cô", "họ". For example: "He decided to leave the village" or "The girl ran quickly home."
- Effect: Provides an overview and comprehensive look at events and characters, making the story objective and rich.
