1.2. Knowledge
a) Vietnamese Language
- Vietnamese Language Knowledge Streams
+ Phonetics and writing: sounds, letters, tonal marks, spelling rules (only learned at the primary level).
+ Vocabulary: expanding vocabulary, the meaning of words and usage, word formation, semantic relations between words.
+ Grammar: punctuation, parts of speech, syntactic structure, and sentence structure, sentence types and usage.
+ Communication activities: rhetorical devices, paragraphs, texts, and text types, some issues on language style and pragmatics.
+ Language development and language variants: loanwords, new words, and new meanings of words, Vietnamese script, language variants distinguished by local, social, functional scope, including multimodal texts (language combined with images, symbols, data, charts, diagrams,...) as a variant of linguistic communication.
- Allocation of Vietnamese language knowledge streams at each educational level
+ Primary level: basic understanding of phonetics, writing, vocabulary, grammar, communication activities, and language variants (language combined with images, data); ability to recognize and begin to understand related linguistic phenomena and apply in communication.
+ Lower secondary level: basic understanding of vocabulary, grammar, communication activities, language development, and language variants (local dialects, social jargons; language combined with images, data, charts, diagrams) to help students understand and apply related linguistic phenomena in communication.
+ Upper secondary level: advanced understanding of Vietnamese to help students understand, analyze, and start to evaluate related linguistic phenomena, with a focus on creative expressions and language use in research reports and communication.

What are the regulations on learners in educational institutions in Vietnam?
Under the provisions in Article 80 of the Education Law 2019, the regulations on learners in educational institutions are as follows:
Learners are persons currently learning at educational institutions of the national educational system. Learners include:
1. Children at preschool education institutions;
2. Students at general education institutions, vocational training classes, vocational - continuing education centers, vocational education centers, vocational secondary schools and pre-university schools;
3. Students at colleges and universities;
4. Students at institutions providing master education;
5. Doctoral candidates at institutions providing doctoral education;
6. Learners of continuing educational programmes.
