What are objectives of the general education curriculum for English subject in Vietnam?
According to Section 3 of the General Education Program for the History subject issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT the objectives of the program are stated as follows:
(1) General Objective:
- The general education program for English helps students acquire a new communication tool, develop their ability to communicate in English through listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Upon completion of the general education program, students can communicate at Level 3 of the 6-level Vietnam's Foreign Language Proficiency Framework, laying the foundation for students to use English in their studies, fostering lifelong learning habits to become global citizens in the integration era.
- The English program provides students with a general understanding of the countries, people, and cultures of some English-speaking countries and others around the world; fostering positive attitudes and emotions towards those countries, people, cultures, and languages.
Additionally, the English curriculum contributes to developing essential qualities and skills for students as future workers: labor awareness and responsibility, career orientation, and career selection aligned with their abilities, interests, and adaptability in the context of the new industrial revolution.
(2) Objectives at the Upper Secondary Level:
After completing the upper secondary English program, students should be able to:
- Use English as a communication tool through the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing to meet basic and practical communication needs on familiar topics related to school, recreational activities, careers, etc.
- Continue to form and develop basic knowledge about English, including phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar; gain deeper insights into the countries, people, and culture of English-speaking countries and others worldwide, understand, and respect cultural diversity, while initially reflecting on Vietnam's cultural values in English.
- Utilize English to improve the quality of learning in other subjects within the general education curriculum.
- Use English to pursue higher learning goals or to enter the workforce immediately after completing upper secondary education.
- Apply different learning methods to manage study time effectively, use information technology in learning and self-study, reinforce self-study methods, self-assess, and take responsibility for learning outcomes, developing lifelong learning habits.
What requirements shall students in Vietnam meet regarding English after completing upper secondary education?
According to Section 4 of the general education program for English issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the requirements are specified as follows:
- Requirements for achieving general qualities and skills:
The English education program contributes to shaping and developing essential qualities (patriotism, kindness, diligence, honesty, responsibility) and general skills (autonomy and self-learning, communication, and cooperation, problem-solving, and creativity).
- Specific skill requirements for the Upper Secondary Level are as follows:
+ Upon completing the upper secondary English program, students can achieve Level 3 English proficiency according to the 6-level Vietnamese Foreign Language Proficiency Framework.
Students can understand the main points of a standard, clear text or speech on familiar matters in work, school, leisure, etc. Students can handle most situations likely to arise where the language is used.
Students are able to write simple texts related to familiar or personally interesting topics.
Students are able to describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes, ambitions, and briefly give reasons, explanations of opinions, and plans.
- Through English, students gain a more profound understanding of the countries, people, and cultures of English-speaking countries and others worldwide;
Students can understand and respect cultural diversity while initially reflecting Vietnam's cultural values in English;
Students can develop qualities of love for the country and people, honesty, kindness, and responsibility towards the environment and community.
Thus, students after completing upper secondary education need to meet both the general and specific requirements of the upper secondary English education program.
