For grade 1 students starting the 2024-2025 school year, parents need to prepare the following:
(1). Regarding study materials:
Books and notebooks: According to the list of textbooks applicable in the locality. To be specific:
- Decision 4507/QD-BGDDT 2019 Approving the list of grade 1 textbooks used in general educational institutions.
32 book titles have been approved.
- Decision 180/QD-BGDDT 2020 Approving the list of grade 1 English textbooks used in general educational institutions
The approved list includes 6 English book titles from various publishers.
- Decision 512/QD-BGDDT 2020 Approving the additional list of grade 1 textbooks used in general educational institutions
The additional approved list includes 7 book titles.
- Decision 756/QD-BGDDT 2020 - Approving the additional grade 1 textbooks used in general educational institutions
This decision approves the additional textbook "Experiential Activities 1" published by Vietnam Education Publishing House.

Note: The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee will decide the textbooks used in the locality.
Study tools: Pencils, pens, erasers, rulers, compasses, set squares, school bags, pencil cases, drawing colors, glue, etc.
Other supplies: Small blackboard, chalk, blackboard cleaning cloth (if needed), supplies for talent subjects (if any).
Name labels: Attach name and class labels to supplies to avoid loss.
(2). Regarding clothing:
Uniforms: Prepare the full set of uniforms according to the school's regulations (if any): shirts, pants/skirts, shoes, socks.
Sportswear: For physical activity sessions.
Typically, the school will inform about clothing during the parents' meeting at the beginning of the year.
Therefore, when starting school, students should dress decently and formally if they do not yet have school uniforms. (For example: trousers, white shirt)

What is the age of grade 1 students in Vietnam?
Based on Article 33 of the Primary School Regulations issued with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT:
Age of Primary School Students
The age for entering first grade is 06 years, calculated by year. Children with disabilities, those with physical or mental development issues, children from regions with special socio-economic difficulties, children from ethnic minorities, orphans without support, children returning from abroad, and children of foreigners studying or working in Vietnam can enter first grade at an older age but not more than 03 years older than the standard age. In cases where children exceed the age limit by more than 03 years, it will be decided by the Head of the Department of Education and Training.
Primary school students may attend school at an older age in cases such as students repeating a grade, students from regions with special socio-economic difficulties, students who are ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, students with physical or mental development issues, orphans without support, children returning from abroad, and other cases as prescribed by law.
Thus, normally, the age for students entering the first grade is 06 years, calculated by year.
However, except for cases where students repeat a grade; students from regions with special socio-economic difficulties, students who are ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, students with physical or mental development issues, orphans without support, children returning from abroad, and other cases as prescribed by law, the age of grade 1 students can be older than 6 years but not more than 03 years.
In cases where children exceed the age limit by more than 03 years, it will be decided by the Head of the Department of Education and Training.
Are grade 1 students in public primary schools exempt from tuition fees in Vietnam?
Tuition fees are the amounts that students must pay to cover part or all of the costs of educational and training services.
Based on Article 14 of Decree 81/2021/ND-CP which states:
Subjects Exempt from Tuition Fees
1. Primary school students in public schools.
2. Learners in specialized fields that meet the socio-economic development, national defense, and security requirements as regulated by the Law on Higher Education. Specialized fields are regulated by the Prime Minister.
According to the above regulations, primary school students in public schools are subjects exempt from tuition fees.
Thus, grade 1 students in public primary schools will be exempt from tuition fees.
