According to Section 2 of the general education program for the primary school History and Geography subject issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the viewpoints on developing the new primary school History and Geography curriculum emphasize the following points:
- The History and Geography curriculum integrates the educational content of history, geography, and some cultural and social elements in connections about space and time; integrates environmental protection content and human values education; links theory with practice, and ties educational content with reality to form and develop in students the specific competencies of the subject and the core qualities, general competencies stipulated in the overall program.
The program connects with other subjects and educational activities such as Nature and Society, Science, Ethics, Experiential Activities, etc., helping students to apply integrated knowledge and skills of various subjects and educational activities to solve problems in learning and life, appropriate to their age.
- Based on inheriting and promoting the strengths of the History and Geography subject in the current general education program and learning from the experiences of advanced countries worldwide, the History and Geography curriculum selects basic and simplified knowledge about nature, population, some economic activities, history, and culture of regions, the country Vietnam, and the world; events, and historical figures reflecting major milestones in the process of building and defending the nation of Vietnam.
The content of the subject ensures both scientific accuracy and suitability with the psychological characteristics and cognitive levels of students.
- The program is designed to gradually expand the geospatial and social space, from the geography, history of the local area, region, country Vietnam to the geography, history of neighboring countries, regions, and the world.
- The program selects practical content for forming and developing students' qualities and competencies through organizing active learning activities such as: exploring historical and geographical issues, practicing and applying (applying what has been learned to identify and solve real-life problems), etc.
- The program is designed to be open, flexible to adjust in accordance with the socio-economic conditions of local areas; suitable to the teachers' capabilities, different student groups, and the practical teaching situation in schools, while still ensuring the common level of general education nationwide, gradually approaching regional and global standards.

The History and Geography subject at the primary level forms and develops in students historical and geographical competencies with the following components:
Scientific historical and geographical cognition; exploring history and geography; applying the learned knowledge and skills; and contributing to the formation and development of general competencies: autonomy and self-study, communication and cooperation, problem-solving, and creativity.
The History and Geography subject at the primary level helps students explore the natural world and surrounding society to foster national pride, love for nature, homeland, and country; awareness of protecting nature, preserving and developing Vietnamese cultural values; respecting cultural differences between countries and ethnic groups;
Thereby contributing to forming and developing attributes of patriotism, kindness, diligence, honesty, and responsibility.
