What are the objectives of teaching Grade 10 Literature in Vietnam?
Based on Subsection 4 Section 3 of the General Education Program issued in conjunction with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives of teaching Grade 10 Literature are as follows:
- Help students continue to develop the qualities that were formed in secondary school; expand and enhance the requirements for developing qualities with specific expressions: being brave, having personality, having ideals and ambitions, knowing how to preserve and promote Vietnamese cultural values; having a spirit of integration and global citizenship awareness.
- Continue to develop the competencies formed in secondary school with higher requirements: understanding both explicit and implicit content of various types of texts with greater difficulty as shown through volume, content, and reading requirements; reading comprehension with a requirement to develop critical thinking; applying knowledge about the characteristics of literary language, literary trends and movements, author's styles, works, internal and external elements of the text to form independent reading competence.
Write competently in argumentative and explanatory text genres (combining expressive methods and argumentative operations), following the correct process, having personal viewpoints, ensuring logic, and being persuasive.
Speak and listen flexibly; have the ability to listen and evaluate the content and form of expression of presentations; know how to participate and have personal viewpoints, personality, and an appropriate debating attitude in discussions.
Develop literary competence with the requirement: distinguishing literary works from works of other artistic forms; analyzing and commenting on the characteristics of literary language; differentiating between the expressive and the expressed in literature; recognizing and analyzing, appreciating literary works based on literary style characteristics; having a rich imagination, knowing how to appreciate, receive and evaluate literature; creating some products with literary qualities.
What are the specific competence requirements in teaching Grade 10 Literature in Vietnam?
According to section 2.3 subsection 2 Section 4 of the General Education Program issued in conjunction with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the specific competence requirements in teaching Grade 10 Literature are as follows:
- Language competence
+ Know how to apply knowledge of the Vietnamese language and knowledge of historical, social, ideological, philosophical contexts, and aesthetic perspectives of various periods to understand more challenging texts (shown through volume, complexity, and reading comprehension requirements).
+ Know how to analyze and evaluate the content and outstanding features of the form of expression of texts, especially creative explorations in language, writing style, and text genres. Students have their own perspectives on people and life; see the role and effect of reading on themselves.
+ Write competently in argumentative and explanatory text genres on topics related to life and career orientation; write following the correct process, combining expressive methods, argumentative styles, and artistic elements; have personal viewpoints on a social issue.
+ Write argumentative texts and informative texts on relatively complex topics; argumentative texts require analyzing, evaluating, and comparing the value of literary works; discussing issues suitable for those nearing adulthood, requiring relatively complex structures and argumentative styles, evidence must be sought from multiple sources; explanatory texts on scientific issues in the form of a research report following conventions; respecting intellectual property rights and avoiding plagiarism.
+ The writings should express emotions, attitudes, personal experiences, and ideas towards the issues raised in the text; showing a perspective, a way of thinking, a lifestyle with strong personality.
+ Know how to debate on issues with opposing viewpoints; have an open-minded attitude and appropriate debate culture; have the ability to listen to presentations and evaluate the content and form of expression of presentations; be interested in expressing personal viewpoints, personality in debates; confidently present scientific issues persuasively. Speak and listen flexibly; understand the methods and process to conduct a debate.

+ Analyze and evaluate literary texts based on understanding artistic styles and literary history.
+ Recognize the characteristics of literary imagery and some differences between literary imagery and other artistic imagery (painting, music, architecture, sculpture); analyze and evaluate the ideological content and ways of expressing ideological content in a literary text; recognize and analyze the characteristics of literary language, stories, plots, and storytelling methods; recognize and analyze characteristics of artistic styles in folklore, medieval, and modern literature; artistic styles of major authors and works.
+ Summarize general features of national literary history (development process, major themes and topics, major authors and works; some values in content and form of national literature) and apply them to reading literary works.
+ Create some types of literary texts that show the ability to express emotions and ideas in an aesthetically pleasing word form.
