The Subject of National Defense and Security Education contributes to the formation and development of essential qualities and general competencies of students at levels that align with the subject matter and educational level as stipulated in the overarching program issued by the Minister of Education and Training.

The Subject of National Defense and Security Education aids in the development of general competencies through domain-specific competencies of the subject, including: the competency to comprehend national defense and security issues, and the competency to apply military knowledge and skills learned into life.

General Orientation of the Educational Methods for the Subject of National Defense and Security Education in Upper Secondary Schools in Vietnam
In Section 6 of the Program issued with Circular 46/2020/TT-BGDDT the general orientation of the educational methods for the subject of National Defense and Security Education in upper secondary school is clearly stated as follows:
- Promote the active, proactive, and creative participation of students; avoid one-way impositions and rote memorization; focus on fostering self-autonomy and self-study capabilities so that students can explore, expand their knowledge base, and continue developing essential qualities and competencies after graduating from upper secondary school; emphasize training skills in applying national defense and security knowledge to identify and solve real-life issues.
- Flexibly and creatively apply various educational methods suitable for educational objectives, content, student demographics, and specific conditions. Teachers can combine multiple teaching methods within one topic.
Traditional teaching methods (lectures, dialogues...) are to be used to promote the active and proactive participation of students.
Enhance the use of advanced teaching methods based on exploiting scientific and technological achievements in teaching by teachers and learning by students, particularly by applying the ongoing digital technology revolution, information, and communication to emphasize the subject's role in student learning (discussions, role-playing, practical work...).
Teaching arrangements should be diverse and flexible, combining individual and group learning, both inside and outside the classroom.
Teachers teaching the subject of National Defense and Security and students studying must have the skills to exploit and reference national and global defense and security knowledge through officially licensed electronic portals issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications to promptly consolidate, supplement, and update new knowledge for learning, research, and teaching.
