Currently, the professional standards for lower secondary school teachers are regulated by Circular 20/2018/TT-BGDDT promulgated to establish the standards for teachers in general educational institutions. To implement an effective, practical, and positively impactful assessment of lower secondary school teachers' standards, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Official Dispatch 4530/BGDDT-NGCBQLGD in 2018 on October 1, 2018, guiding the implementation of Circular 20.

According to Circular 20/2018/TT-BGDDT, the assessment criteria for lower secondary school teachers are clearly stated as follows:
Lower secondary school teachers are currently assessed on 15 criteria, including:

What are the assessment requirements and procedures according to the professional standards for lower secondary school teachers in Vietnam?
According to Chapter 3 of the Professional Standards for Teachers in General Educational Institutions, promulgated together with Circular 20/2018/TT-BGDDT, as follows:
* Regarding assessment requirements according to professional standards for teachers, the following principles must be adhered to:
- Objective, comprehensive, fair, and democratic.
- Based on the teacher's qualities, abilities, and work process in specific conditions of the school and locality.
- Based on the levels of each criterion achieved in Chapter II of this Regulation with verifiable and appropriate evidence.
* Regarding assessment procedures and classification of assessment results according to professional standards for lower secondary school teachers, it will be carried out as follows:
- Assessment Process
+ Teachers self-assess according to professional standards for teachers;
+ General educational institutions collect opinions from colleagues in the specialized group for the teacher being assessed according to professional standards for teachers;
+ The head of the general educational institution conducts the assessment and informs the teacher of the assessment results based on the teacher's self-assessment, colleagues' opinions, and the practical performance of the teacher through verifiable and appropriate evidence.
- Classification of Assessment Results
+ Meeting professional standards at a good level: All criteria are at least at the fairly good level, with at least 2/3 of the criteria at the good level, including criteria in Article 5 of this Regulation at the good level;
+ Meeting professional standards at a fairly good level: All criteria are at least at the satisfactory level, with at least 2/3 of the criteria at the fairly good level, including criteria in Article 5 of the Professional Standards for Teachers in General Educational Institutions, promulgated together with Circular 20/2018/TT-BGDDT at the fairly good level;
+ Meeting professional standards at a satisfactory level: All criteria are at least at the satisfactory level;
+ Not meeting professional standards: One or more criteria are assessed as not meeting the standard (a criterion is assessed as not meeting the standard if it does not meet the requirements for that criterion's satisfactory level).
Additionally, the assessment according to the professional standards for lower secondary school teachers will be carried out on the following assessment cycle:
- Teachers self-assess annually at the end of the school year.
- The head of the general educational institution organizes the assessment of teachers biannually at the end of the school year.
- In special cases, with the approval of the higher management authority, the school can shorten the teacher assessment cycle.
