Examination subjects, content, format, and duration
1. Examination subjects:
a) For the National excellent student contest, the subjects tested include: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, and Foreign Languages (English, Russian, French, Chinese). Consideration for organizing the exam will only be given to subjects registered by at least 05 units or more. Adjustment of subjects (if any) will be considered and decided by the Minister of Education and Training;
b) For the Olympic Team Selection Exam, the subjects tested include: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics.
2. Content of the exam: Within the high school education program, the teaching content of specialized subjects at the high school level; for the Olympic Team Selection Exam, the content approaches international and regional Olympic standards.

How to handle unusual incidents during the National excellent student contest in Vietnam?
Based on Article 10 of the Regulation on the National excellent student contest issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT, guidance on handling unusual incidents is as follows:
(1). In case the test paper has errors, the leadership of the Council must immediately report to the Exam Steering Committee for handling measures.
(2). All unusual cases concerning the test paper must be reported to the Exam Steering Committee for consideration and decision.
(3). If the CD containing the listening part of the Foreign Language test is damaged:
- If the primary CD is damaged but the backup CD is not, the Chairperson of the Exam Council shall document the condition of the CDs and use the backup CD;
- If both the primary and backup CDs are damaged, the Chairperson of the Exam Council shall document the condition of the CDs, stop the Foreign Language exam with the damaged CD and immediately report to the Head of the Exam Steering Committee;
The Head of the Exam Steering Committee is responsible for directing the Exam Council to conduct the exam using a backup CD containing the listening test of the Foreign Language subject, as per the decision of the Minister of Education and Training.
(4). If the test paper is leaked:
- The Exam Steering Committee is entirely responsible for handling the test paper leak incident. Once an official conclusion on the test paper leak is made, the Exam Steering Committee decides to cancel the subject exam with the leaked test paper and organize a re-examination using a backup test paper at an appropriate time, as per the decision of the Minister of Education and Training.
- The Ministry of Education and Training shall cooperate with relevant agencies to check, verify, conclude the cause of the test paper leak; handle the individual leaking the test paper and those involved according to legal regulations.
(5). In case of electricity supply issues or computer problems in the Informatics exam room:
- The Chairperson of the Exam Council where the incident occurs shall pause the Informatics exam for affected candidates or stop the Informatics exam and direct corrective measures based on one of the following options:
+ Continue the Informatics exam immediately after fixing the issue and compensate the lost time for the candidates, if the repair time does not exceed 30 minutes;
+ Cancel the Informatics exam, if the repair time exceeds 30 minutes. Immediately report the incident and corrective measures to the Head of the Exam Steering Committee;
- If the Informatics exam must be canceled, a re-examination shall be organized using a backup test paper at an appropriate time as per the decision of the Minister of Education and Training;
- Units deliberately causing the incident will be handled according to legal regulations.
(6). In case of severe natural disasters, the Head of the Exam Steering Committee may decide to postpone the exam and direct the conduct of the exam as per the decision of the Minister of Education and Training.
(7). During the organization of the exam, if other unusual incidents occur, related organizations and individuals must immediately report them to the Head of the Exam Steering Committee for appropriate and prompt handling measures.

3. Examination format and duration:
a) National excellent student contest: Two exam sessions for subjects Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, and Foreign Languages; one exam session for subjects Literature, History, Geography; exam duration is 180 minutes. Informatics is tested in the form of programming on a computer; other subjects are tested in written format: Foreign Languages have an additional speaking test format, candidates have 05 minutes for preparation and 05 minutes for recording;
b) Olympic Team Selection Exam: Two exam sessions for each subject; Physical, Chemistry and Biology have an additional practical session; exam duration for Informatics is 300 minutes per exam, Mathematics is 270 minutes per exam, other subjects are 240 minutes per exam. The practical session duration for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology subjects is 180 minutes.
The duration of the exams for the National excellent student contest is 180 minutes. Foreign Language subjects have an additional speaking test format, candidates have 05 minutes for preparation and 05 minutes for recording.
