Pursuant to Section 4 of the General Education Curriculum issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT (amended by Article 1 of Circular 13/2022/TT-BGDDT) regarding the education plan:
EDUCATION PLAN
The general education curriculum is divided into two phases: the basic education phase (from grades 1 to 9) and the career-oriented education phase (from grades 10 to 12).
The curriculum system and educational activities of the general education program include mandatory subjects and educational activities, optional subjects oriented towards a career path (referred to as elective subjects), and free-choice subjects.
The actual learning time in an academic year is equivalent to 35 weeks. Educational institutions can organize teaching for either one session/day or two sessions/day. Institutions offering either one session/day or two sessions/day must implement a standardized mandatory curriculum for all educational institutions nationwide.
Upon entering the grade 10 in the academic year 2024-2025, students prepare for the career-oriented education phase and will select the following subjects:
*Career-Oriented Phase
- Mandatory subjects and educational activities: Literature; Mathematics; Foreign Language 1; History; Physical Education; National Defense and Security Education; Experiential Activities and Career Guidance; Local Educational Content.
- Elective subjects: Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Information Technology, Music, Fine Arts.
- Students choose 4 elective subjects from the aforementioned list.
- Study topics: Each subject (Literature, Mathematics, History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Information Technology, Music, and Fine Arts) has specific study topics forming study clusters to fulfill the requirement for deep specialization, helping students enhance their knowledge and practical skills, and applying learned knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems in line with career orientation demands. Each study topic's duration is 10 or 15 sessions; the total duration for each subject's study cluster is 35 sessions per academic year.
In each grade (10, 11, 12), students choose 3 study clusters from 3 subjects according to their preferences and the school's ability to organize.
- Schools can create subject combinations from the above subjects and study topics to meet students' needs and ensure compatibility with teacher resources, infrastructure, and teaching equipment.
Free-choice subjects: Ethnic Minority Language, Foreign Language 2.

What are procedures for compiling grade 10 textbooks in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Clause 1, Article 9 of the Regulations on standards, procedures for compiling, revising textbooks, and standards for organizations and individuals compiling textbooks; the organization and activities of the National Textbook Evaluation Council issued together with Circular 33/2017/TT-BGDDT (amended by Clause 2, Article 1 of Circular 05/2022/TT-BGDDT), the procedures for compiling grade 10 textbooks is as follows:
Step 1: Select authors for compiling
- Organizations and individuals compiling textbooks select authors according to the standards.
- Authors draft an overall outline, detailed outline, and compilation plan based on the general education curriculum issued by the Minister of Education and Training.
- Authors must ensure the progress and quality of textbook compilation.
Step 2: Compile, edit, design, illustrate, and complete at least one lesson.
- After conducting trial teaching, receive feedback to finalize that lesson with contributions and consensus from all authors to develop other lessons.
Step 3: Gather opinions from teachers, educational administrators, scientists, and educators knowledgeable about general education to comment and evaluate the textbook sample as prescribed by law.
Step 4: Complete the textbook sample and submit it to the Ministry of Education and Training for evaluation.
Step 5: The Ministry of Education and Training evaluates the textbook sample.
Step 6: Organizations and individuals compiling textbooks complete the textbook sample after evaluation.
Step 7: The Ministry of Education and Training approves and authorizes the use of textbooks.
Step 8: Organizations and individuals compiling textbooks organize the publication and distribution of textbooks.
