Based on Sub-section 2, Section 5 of the General Education Program for the Vietnamese Language subject issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDĐT, the Vietnamese knowledge for 5th-grade students includes the following contents:
- Rules for writing the names of people and places in foreign countries
- Some cases of capitalizing common nouns to express special respect
- Vocabulary according to themes
- Dictionary: how to find words, meanings of words, how to use words, and lookup other information
- Meanings of some easily understood and common idioms
- Meanings of some common Sino
-Vietnamese elements and "homophones with different meanings"
- Synonyms: characteristics and effects
- Polysemous words and their meanings in texts
- Pronouns and conjunctions: characteristics and functions- Simple sentences and compound sentences: characteristics and functions
- Functions of dashes (placed in the middle of sentences to mark elements of explanation); hyphens (connecting syllables in borrowed terms containing multiple syllables)
- Rhetorical techniques of word repetition, phrase repetition: characteristics and effects
- Linking between sentences in a paragraph, some means of sentence linkage and linking words: characteristics and effects
- Text types and genres:
+ Essays rewriting the ending based on a story
+ Descriptive essays about people, landscapes
+ Paragraphs expressing emotions and feelings about an event or a poem, story
+ Paragraphs presenting opinions on a social phenomenon
+ Essays explaining a natural phenomenon, book or film introduction, work reports, activity programs utilizing tables and charts; promotional materials (flyers, posters, etc.)
- Information using images, figures (non-verbal communication means).
Additionally, the literature knowledge for 5th grade students includes the following contents:
- Themes- Story endings- Realistic and fictional stories- Details, time, location in stories; imagery in poetry- Characters in plays and dialogues
Materials used for 5th-grade students include:
* Literary texts- Folktales, short stories, science fiction; descriptive paragraphs (essays)- Poems, verses, rhymes, proverbs- Literary scripts
Text length: stories and scripts approximately 300 - 350 words, descriptive essays about 200 - 250 words, poetry about 110 - 130 words
* Informational texts- Text explaining a natural phenomenon- Text introducing books, films- Activity programs; advertisements
