What are requirements for methods of teaching writing for students in Vietnam?
Based on Subsection 3, Section 6 of the General Education Program for the Literature subject issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the purpose of teaching writing is to train thinking and writing skills, thereby educating qualities and developing the personality of students.
Therefore, when teaching writing, teachers emphasize the requirement to create ideas and know how to present ideas coherently, creatively, and convincingly.
Teachers focus on the requirement to guide students through the steps of creating text, practicing writing according to the steps and characteristics of text types.
Through practice, teachers guide students to analyze the texts in the reading comprehension section and supplementary texts to understand the characteristics of text types and the process of creating texts; use questions to help students determine the purpose and content of writing; introduce sources of materials, guide how to find ideas and draft outlines; guide students in writing texts; self-correcting and exchanging based on the evaluation criteria for the writing.
In elementary education, there are two requirements in teaching writing: teaching writing techniques and teaching paragraph and text writing.
Teaching writing techniques (handwriting practice, spelling) mainly uses the practice method with models. Teaching paragraph and text writing is flexible, using methods such as model practice, question posing, group discussion, creative writing, etc.
In secondary and high school education, teachers require students to perform more complex tasks such as gathering information for writing from various sources (printed materials, online materials, interviews, collecting data from real life); discussing, analyzing the criteria for evaluating the writing; knowing self-correction, exchanging in groups to complete the writing and gaining experience from each writing session, etc.
In these two educational levels, besides continuing the method of analyzing text models, teachers focus on guiding positive writing techniques to help students not only master the skills of creating according to each text type but also develop critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and creativity expressed through their writing.
In addition to regular texts, students also practice creating electronic texts and multimodal texts.
Teachers use methods such as model analysis, question posing, problem raising, elicitation, etc., to guide students in forming outlines, choosing ways to develop and express; organizing students to practice writing portions of the text, such as writing the introduction, conclusion, or one or several paragraphs in the body.
The organization of teaching paragraph and text writing generally includes main activities such as: presenting the tasks required for students to perform; requiring students to work individually, in pairs, or groups; organizing the presentation of work results, discussing assigned tasks, and drawing lesson content; giving feedback and evaluation, etc.; after writing is completed, students need opportunities to speak and present what they have written.
