What are requirements for literature subject at lower secondary level in Vietnam?
According to Section 4 of the Appendix of the General Education Program for Literature, issued under Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, there are two requirements for the literature subject at the lower secondary level as follows:
[1] Language Proficiency
- General Requirements:
+ Knowing how to apply Vietnamese language knowledge along with personal experiences and reasoning abilities to understand texts; knowing how to read texts by type and genre; understanding the explicit and implicit content of texts.
+ Recognizing and initially analyzing and evaluating the content and prominent features of the expression form of texts;
+ Being able to compare one text with another, relate to personal life experiences; thereby having one's own views, thoughts, and feelings about life, enriching one's spiritual life.
- Requirements for Grades 6 and 7: Writing narrative, descriptive, and expressive essays; initially knowing how to write argumentative, explanatory, and practical essays.
- Requirements for Grades 8 and 9: Writing complete narrative, argumentative, and explanatory essays, following correct steps and combining various expression modes.
- Writing narrative texts focusing on creatively retelling read stories; witnessed and participated events; imaginary stories combining descriptive and expressive elements;
- Descriptive texts focusing on activity description (describing activities); expressive texts about scenery, people, and reflecting on literary works;
- Knowing how to create poetry primarily to recognize the characteristics of some familiar forms of poetry;
- Writing argumentative texts presenting thoughts and personal opinions, requiring relatively simple argumentative operations and easily accessible evidence;
- Writing explanatory texts about issues close to students' lives and knowledge with common structures;
- Filling out some forms, drafting some practical texts such as work memos, emails, reports, advertisements, and interviews.
- Writing texts following the correct process, knowing how to find materials to meet text writing requirements; understanding intellectual property rights and knowing how to cite texts.
- Presenting ideas and feelings clearly; being confident when speaking in front of many people; using appropriate language and gestures when speaking;
- Retelling coherently read and heard stories; sharing own feelings, attitudes, experiences, and ideas about discussed issues; discussing opinions on read and heard issues; explaining an object or process;
- Knowing how to speak appropriately to the purpose, audience, and communication context; using images, symbols, charts, etc., to present issues effectively.
- Understanding listening with the appropriate attitude and summarizing content; recognizing and initially evaluating the arguments and evidence used by the speaker;
- Recognizing the emotions of the speaker; knowingly responding to what has been heard effectively.
[2] Literary Proficiency
- Recognizing and distinguishing different types of literary texts: stories, poetry, plays, and essays, and some typical forms for each type; analyzing the effects of some artistic formal elements of each literary form; understanding both the explicit and implicit content of literary texts.
- Presenting feelings and thoughts about literary works and their impacts on oneself; initially creating some literary products.
- For Grades 6 and 7:
+ Recognizing topics, understanding themes, and meanings of read texts; recognizing folk tales, short stories, lyrical poetry, and narrative poetry; lyrical essays and narrative essays; recognizing lyrical subjects, lyrical characters, and the expressive and cognitive values of literary works;
+ Recognizing and analyzing the effects of some artistic formal elements and methods linked with the characteristics of each literary form (plot, narrator's voice, character's voice, space and time, rhyme, rhythm, images, and rhetorical devices like metaphor, metonymy, exaggeration, and understatement).
- For Grades 8 and 9:
+ Understanding the message, thoughts, emotions, and attitudes of the author in texts; recognizing literary scripts, novels, and Nôm narrative poems, regulated poetry and free verse, tragedies, and comedies;
+ Understanding the content and form of literary works, literary imagery; recognizing and analyzing the effects of some artistic elements and methods of each literary form (combining narrator's and character's voice, perspective, conflict, poetic law, structure, language, lyrical emotional flow;
+ Analyzing rhetorical devices such as repetition, puns, irony, antithesis). Recognizing some general features of the history of Vietnamese literature; understanding the impact of literature on personal life.

What are the general objectives when studying the literature subject at lower secondary level in Vietnam?
According to Section 3 of the Appendix of the General Education Program for Literature, issued under Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, there are three general objectives when studying the Literature subject at the lower secondary level as follows:
{1} Helping students continue to develop the good qualities that have been formed in primary school; enhancing and expanding the quality development requirements with specific manifestations such as:
+ Being proud of national history and national literature;
+ Having dreams and aspirations, having self-learning and self-respect spirits,
+ Having a sense of citizenship, respecting the law.
{2} Continuing to develop general competencies, language competencies, and literary competencies that have been formed in primary school with higher achievement requirements. Developing language proficiency with the requirements:
+ Distinguishing between literary texts, argumentative texts, and informative texts;
+ Understanding both explicit content and implicit content of texts;
+ Writing coherent, logical, complete narrative, descriptive, expressive, argumentative, explanatory, and practical essays following correct processes and combining various expression modes;
+ Speaking clearly and coherently; being confident and appropriate to the communication context; listening and understanding with the appropriate attitude.
{3} Developing literary proficiency with the requirements:
+ Distinguishing between types of stories, poetry, essays, literary scripts, and some specific sub-genres;
+ Recognizing the characteristics of literary language, recognizing and analyzing the effects of formal elements and artistic methods associated with each literary form;
+ Recognizing expressive value, cognitive value, aesthetic value; analyzing the imagery, content, and form of literary works;
+ Creating some literary products.
