Is it permissible for students in Vietnam, who has been accepted to university with an admission letter, to defer the result due to serious illness?

Based on Article 10 of the university and college admissions regulations for Preschool Education issued together with Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDDT, the provisions for deferring admission results are as follows:

Deferring admission results

1. Candidates with an admission notice may defer their admission results in the following cases:

a) Participating in military service or young volunteer work immediately in the year of admission, based on the decision or order of the competent authority;

b) Suffering from a severe illness or serious accident that prevents timely admission, with medical records and confirmation from a competent medical authority.

2. Candidates under the provisions of clause 1 should send a deferment application along with proof documents to the admitting institution. The maximum deferral period is determined by the admitting institution but shall not be less than 3 years for those subject to point a, clause 1 of this Article.

3. Once eligible to return to study, the candidate with deferred admission results must complete the admission procedures as per the admitting institution's regulations, including proof of having completed the military service or having recovered from the illness. For cases under clause 1 with a deferral period of 3 years or more, the admitting institution may consider introducing the candidate to pre-university courses before official enrollment.

Candidates with an admission notice can defer their admission results if they fall into one of the following two categories:

- Participating in military service or young volunteer work immediately in the year of admission, per the decision or order of the competent authority;

- Suffering from a severe illness or serious accident that prevents timely admission, with medical records and confirmation from a competent medical authority.

Thus, candidates with a university admission notice can defer their admission due to severe illness.

How to handle candidates who do not confirm their admission within the stipulated time in Vietnam?

Based on clause 3, Article 21 of the university and college admissions regulations for Preschool Education issued together with Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDDT, the provisions for notification of admission confirmation results are as follows:

Notification of results and admission confirmation

...

2. Candidates confirm their admission online on the system before enrolling at the admitting institution.

3. For candidates who do not confirm admission within the stipulated deadline:

a) If there is no legitimate reason, they are considered to have waived their admission, and the institution has the right not to accept them;

b) If due to illness, accidents, with confirmation from a district-level hospital or higher or due to natural disasters with confirmation from the district-level People’s Committee or higher, the institution may consider accepting the candidate or deferring the admission results for a later intake;

c) If due to errors, mistakes by the admissions staff or the candidate, the institution should proactively cooperate with the relevant individuals and organizations to review evidence and decide whether to accept the candidate or defer the admission results for a later intake.
