What are question words in English? How to use them?

Currently, there are approximately 15 basic question words in English:

  1. What

  15. What kind

Instructions on how to use basic question words in English are as follows:

1. What: Ask about things, events, general information.

Example:

What is your favorite color?

What did you do yesterday?

2. Who: Ask about people.

Example:

Who is that man?

Who called you?

3. Where: Ask about location, position.

Example:

Where do you live?

Where is the library?

4. When: Ask about time.

Example:

When is your birthday?

When did you arrive?

5. Why: Ask about reasons, causes.

Example:

Why are you late?

Why did you buy this book?

6. How: Ask about the method, way, degree.

Example:

How are you?

How do you go to school?

7. Which: Ask about choices within a group.

Example:

Which book do you prefer?

Which color do you like, red or blue?

8. Whose: Ask about ownership.

Example:

Whose idea was it?

9. How much: Ask about the quantity of uncountable nouns.

Example:

How much water do you drink?

How much does it cost?

10. How many: Ask about the quantity of countable nouns.

Example:

How many books do you have?

How many people are there?

11. What time: Ask about specific time.

Example:

What time is it?

What time does the movie start?

12. What kind: Ask about types, categories.

Example:

What kind of music do you like?

What kind of car do you want?

13. Whom: Ask about the object of the verb (persons or things receiving the action), usually used in formal writing.

Example:

Whom did you meet at the party?

14. How long: Ask about the duration.

Example:

How long have you lived here?

How long does it take to get there?

15. How far: Ask about distance.

Example:

How far is it to the airport?

Note:

Auxiliary verbs: Following the question words are usually auxiliary verbs (do, does, did, am, is, are, was, were, have, has, had, can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might, must).

Answers: Responses will depend on the question and context.

Example:

What is your name? - My name is Hoa.

Where do you live? - I live in Hanoi.

When do students in Vietnam learn English?

According to the English Language Education Program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:

English is a compulsory subject in the general education program from Grade 3 to Grade 12. As one of the tool subjects in general schools, English not only helps students form and develop communication skills in English but also contributes to the formation and development of general competences, to live and work more effectively, and to study other subjects better as well as to learn for life.

The subject of English provides students with an important international communication tool, helping them exchange information, scientific and advanced technical knowledge, and explore cultures, thereby contributing to the understanding between peoples, forming a sense of global citizenship, and contributing to the development of individual qualities and abilities. Through learning English and understanding different cultures, students can better understand and appreciate their own language and culture.

Thus, English is a compulsory subject in the general education program from Grade 3 to Grade 12. Therefore, from Grade 3 onwards, students are required to study English.

What are the basic goals of the English in the general education program in Vietnam?

According to the General Education Program in English issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the basic goals of the English in the general education program in Vietnam is to help students form and develop communication skills through practicing listening, speaking, reading, writing, and language knowledge (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar).

Communication skills and language knowledge are built on the basis of specific communication competence units, in topics and themes suitable to the needs and capabilities of students, to help them meet the requirements stipulated in the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam, specifically, students completing primary education reach Level 1, students completing lower secondary education reach Level 2, and students completing upper secondary education reach Level 3.
