What are regulations on the age for lower secondary school students in Vietnam?
Based on Article 28 of the Education Law 2019, the regulations on the age of lower secondary school students are as follows:
(1) The levels of education and age of students in primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary education (general education) are regulated as follows:
- Primary education is conducted for 05 school years, from grade one to the end of grade five. The age for students to enter grade one is 06 years old, calculated by year;
- Lower Secondary Education is conducted for 04 school years, from grade six to the end of grade nine. Students entering grade six must have completed the primary education program. The age for students entering grade six is 11 years old, calculated by year;
- Upper Secondary Education is conducted for 03 school years, from grade ten to the end of grade twelve. Students entering grade ten must have a lower secondary school diploma. The age for students entering grade ten is 15 years old, calculated by year.
(2) Cases where students study beyond the stipulated age in part (1) include:
- Students who skip grades due to intellectual development advancement;
- Students studying beyond the stipulated age due to repetition, students in areas with special socio-economic difficulties, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students poorly developed in physical or intellectual terms, orphans with no support, students from poor households, students returning from abroad, and other cases as regulated by law.
(3) General education is divided into basic education and vocational-oriented education. The basic education phase includes primary and lower secondary levels; the vocational-oriented education phase is the upper secondary level. Students in vocational education institutions may study the general upper secondary educational content.
Does career orientation in education help lower secondary school students in Vietnam graduate?
According to Article 9 of the Education Law 2019:
Career orientation and student classification
1. Career orientation in education is a system of measures implemented inside and outside educational institutions to provide students with knowledge about professions and the ability to choose a profession based on a combination of personal desires, fortes and social labour demands.
2. Student classification is a measure of organizing educational activities on the basis of career orientation in education, enabling lower secondary and upper secondary graduates to continue with their studies in higher educational levels/qualifications or vocational education or to join the labour force with regard to personal capacity, circumstances and social demands, contributing to the regulation of the professional structure following the developing requirements of the country.
3. The Government shall provide for career orientation and student classification in each period of time, meeting the requirements of socio-economic development.
