People's Army
1. The People's Army is the core force of the people's armed forces in carrying out national defense duties, including regular forces and reserve forces. The regular forces of the People's Army include the main army and local army.
December 22nd annually is the traditional day of the People's Army, the national defense festival day.
- The People's Army is tasked with readiness for combat, defending the Fatherland; engaging in mobilization and propaganda of the Communist Party’s policies, the State's laws; working in labor and production, combining national defense with socio-economic development, participating in civil defense, and collaborating with the entire population to build the country; fulfilling international obligations.

What are sujects of the course on National Defense and Security Education in Vietnam?
According to the stipulations in Article 11 of the 2013 Education Law on National Defense and Security:
upper secondary schools, intermediate secondary schools, and vocational secondary schools
- Education on national defense and security in upper secondary schools, intermediate secondary schools, and vocational secondary schools is a compulsory subject.
- It ensures that students gain initial understanding of the all-people national defense, people’s security; the tradition of resisting foreign invaders of the nation, the armed forces of the people, and Vietnamese military art; basic knowledge necessary for civil defense and military skills; readiness to fulfill military obligations to defend the Fatherland.
- Organize teaching and learning according to program distribution. During the school year, based on specific conditions, cooperate with relevant agencies, organizations, and units to organize extracurricular learning activities for students with suitable content and forms.
Accordingly, as stipulated above, the subject of Education on National Defense and Security is a compulsory subject for upper secondary schools, intermediate secondary schools, and vocational secondary schools.
What is the general orientation of teaching mthods for National Defense and Security Education at the upper secondary school level in Vietnam?
Based on Section 6 of the Program issued together with Circular 46/2020/TT-BGDDT, the general orientation of the teaching methods for National Defense and Security Education at the upper secondary school level is as follows:
- Promote the positivity, proactiveness, and creativity of students; avoid one-sided imposition and rote memorization; focus on cultivating self-learning abilities so that students can explore, expand their knowledge base, and continue to develop essential qualities and abilities after graduating from upper secondary school; emphasize the practice of applying defense and security knowledge to discover and solve real-world issues.
- Flexibly and creatively apply educational methods suitable to education goals, content, the student audience, and specific conditions. Teachers can combine many teaching methods within a single topic.
Traditional teaching methods (lectures, dialogue,...) are used to enhance students' positivity and proactivity. Intensify the use of advanced teaching methods based on leveraging achievements in science and technology in teachers' teaching and students' learning, particularly by applying the ongoing digital technology revolution, information, and communications to highlight students' roles as active learners (discussion, role-playing, hands-on activities, etc.). A variety of flexible and diverse teaching formats are implemented; combining individual and group learning, in-class, and out-of-class learning.
Teachers and students taking the course on Education of National Defense and Security need to have the skills to access and refer to domestic and international defense and security knowledge through the system of official electronic information portals authorized by the Ministry of Information and Communications for publishing on the Internet. This serves to consolidate, supplement, and promptly update new knowledge in service of the learning, research, and teaching processes.
What is the duration for implementing the National Defense and Security Education Program at the upper secondary school level in Vietnam?
According to Subsection 2, Section 8 of the Program issued together with Circular 46/2020/TT-BGDDT, the duration for implementing the National Defense and Security Education Program at the upper secondary school level is specified as follows:
(1) Duration of program implementation across grades
The total duration for the entire subject is 105 periods, divided as follows: Grade 10: 35 periods, Grade 11: 35 periods, Grade 12: 35 periods. Based on the academic year program, educational institutions plan the teaching schedule to ensure adequate time.
(2) Duration allocated for educational content
The time allocated for each educational content is proactively arranged by the textbook authors and teachers based on the required outcomes for each grade and actual teaching conditions.
