What are characteristics of the English subject in the general education curriculum in Vietnam?
According to Section 1 of the English subject curriculum issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT on the general education curriculum:
English is a compulsory subject from Grade 3 to Grade 12.
As one of the tool subjects in general education, English not only helps students form and develop communication skills in English but also contributes to forming and developing general capabilities, to live and work more effectively, to study well in other subjects as well as to study for life.
English provides students with an important international communication tool, helping them exchange information, advanced scientific and technical knowledge, and understand various cultures; thereby contributing to building understanding among nations, forming a sense of global citizenship, and contributing to the development of personal qualities and capabilities. Through learning English and understanding different cultures, students can better understand and more appreciatively embrace their own language and culture.
As a compulsory subject in the general education curriculum, English is directly related to and has reciprocal impacts on many other subjects/educational contents such as Literature/Vietnamese, Natural and Social Sciences, History and Geography, Arts, Physical Education, Information Technology, and Experiential Activities. English also serves as a tool in teaching and learning other subjects, especially Mathematics and natural sciences.
The basic objective of the general education English curriculum is to help students form and develop communication skills through practicing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and language knowledge (phonetics, vocabulary, grammar).
The communication skills and language knowledge are built on specific communicative competence units, topics, and themes that match the needs and abilities of general education students to help them achieve the requirements stated in the 6-level foreign language proficiency framework for Vietnam (issued according to Circular 01/2014/TT-BGDDT), specifically, primary school students achieve Level 1, lower secondary students achieve Level 2, and upper secondary students achieve Level 3.
The content of the general education English curriculum reflects the basic orientations stated in the overarching general education curriculum of the Ministry of Education and Training, specifically:
At the primary level (Grade 3-5), teaching English helps students initially form and develop communication skills through four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with a greater focus on listening and speaking skills.
At the lower secondary level, teaching English continues to help students form and develop communication skills, as well as develop critical thinking skills and enhance students' understanding of the culture and society of English-speaking countries and deepen their understanding of their own nation's culture and society.
At the upper secondary level, teaching English helps students develop communication skills in English based on the foundation of the English curriculum at primary and lower secondary levels, equipping students with lifelong learning skills to continuously study and develop future work capabilities.

After completing the English curriculum at the lower secondary level, students can:
- Use English as a communication tool through four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing to meet basic and direct communication needs in familiar and everyday situations.
- Have basic knowledge of English, including phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar; through English, gain a general understanding of the country, people, and cultures of English-speaking countries and other countries around the world, while also understanding and taking pride in the values of their own national culture.
- Have a positive attitude towards the subject and learning English, initially using English to explore other subjects in the general education curriculum.
- Form and apply different learning methods and strategies to develop communication skills in English both inside and outside the classroom, manage study time, and form the habit of self-study.
